Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Region - DiSUIT

About us

DiSUIT is one of the newest departments at the University of Insubria (established on 1 January 2019) and was founded with the aim of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between the humanities, sciences and social sciences in order to promote and study the region in all its historical, linguistic, cultural and environmental complexity, acting as a hub and meeting point for humanities, computer science and mathematics, and geological and ecological expertise, which have long been present at the University.

The department aims to promote humanities and social sciences in the contemporary context; the department’s objective is also to respond to the needs of an increasingly complex and ever-changing world from a perspective that combines global dynamics and local specificities, bearing in mind that the Insubric territory is by no means a periphery of the world, but is situated within Europe, including neighbouring Switzerland.

The studia humanitatis (the social sciences), with disciplinary fields focused on the study of information and territorial assets, are to be understood as intersecting disciplinary frameworks that encompass knowledge —including very recent developments— linked by their very origins to the world of science and technology: the disciplines of computer science and computational algorithms form the basis of the digital humanities and relate to the modelling and technological disciplines linked to the restoration, conservation and identification of ‘cultural heritage’, which expand related disciplines such as archaeology and art history.

DiSUIT operates at university (i.e. internal), city, Insubric (and therefore also Swiss), Lombard and national levels, developing partnerships in the educational sector with schools of all levels, libraries, public and private cultural institutions, foundations, local government departments, museums and aquariums, and other universities to promote the production, circulation and dissemination of knowledge at national and international levels.

DiSUIT encompasses traditional humanities disciplines, but also has a strong scientific component
The degree programmes associated with it are the three-year degree programme in Communication Sciences and the master’s degree programmes in Communication Sciences and Techniques and Languages and Skills for Education. The programme also includes the first-level Master’s programmes “FILIS – Intercultural Italian Language Trainers for Foreigners” and “DAITAL2 – Literacy and Italian as a Second Language Teaching”.

The department also offers the PhD in Law and Humanities.

The primary mission of DiSUIT is to integrate scientific research with the needs of the Como and Varese regions. Through an interdisciplinary approach which is its defining feature, DiSUIT fosters the ability to generate positive impacts on society, thanks in part to the funding it has secured from various bodies such as the MIUR, the CARIPLO Foundation, the Volta Foundation, the One Ocean Foundation and the Rothschild Foundation.
DiSUIT researchers are involved in national and international collaborations and research groups.

What We Do for the Community (Third Mission)

DiSUIT aims to develop partnerships with schools of all levels, libraries, public and private cultural institutions, foundations, local government departments, museums and aquariums, and other universities – not necessarily based in Lombardy – in order to promote the production, circulation and dissemination of knowledge, including abroad, with a particular focus on Switzerland. At present, we have begun to contact various local organisations of considerable importance, both in the humanities and in the field of popular science.

DiSUIT has lecturers and courses at both of the University’s main campuses. Although there is a need to expand facilities and services for students, the department offers practical opportunities to support classroom activities during lectures, with various IT and language laboratories available in both Varese and Como. The activities carried out in the laboratories are extremely valuable in preparing students for the world of work.

Quality Assurance and our organisation

The Department recognises the Quality Assurance policy as a fundamental element for continuous improvement in all three key areas (teaching, research, third mission), through the AIQua Committees, which monitor quality processes within degree programmes, and the AIQua-R Committee, responsible for the continuous monitoring and evaluation of research and the third mission. The Director also makes use of delegates in specific areas (internationalisation, student guidance, research).
To this end, it has established both the bodies required by law and other departmental bodies specifically dedicated to the centralised management and optimisation of its activities and relations with its stakeholders.
