Spin off

Spin-offs are new businesses set up by teachers, researchers, post-docs and technical and administrative staff, who use the know-how and skills generated in an academic research context.

From a legal point of view, a spin-off is no different from a normal for-profit company, and researchers who become partners in a company receive a share of the profits.

With the entry into force of the Regulations for the establishment and accreditation of innovative companies (PDF attached) , the University encourages the creation of start-ups, recognising them as one of the most innovative tools for technology transfer to the market.

In order to be defined as a University start-up, a company must have the following characteristics:

1. It must be a company whose activities are based on research results and/or know-how obtained and developed at least in part at the University and whose partners include the University and at least:

  • a professor or researcher;
  • a member of the T/A staff;
  • a collaborator (including research fellows and doctoral students);
  • a student.

2. The company may only be established as a limited liability company.
3. Start-up companies with the connotation of “innovative start-ups” are identified in accordance with the provisions of Decree Law 179/2012 on “Urgent measures for the growth of the country”, converted into Law No. 221 of 17 December 2012, Art. 25.

Anyone interested in submitting a start-up proposal can contact the Research and Innovation Office to arrange an initial meeting, focus on the aspects to be described and explored in the business proposal, and learn about the examination stages required by university regulations.
