DiSAT is the home department for 4 Bachelor’s degree programmes and 4 Master’s degree programmes, covering the hard sciences and the engineering and environmental field.
The hard science pathways (in chemistry, physics and mathematics) are complete cycles offered entirely by the Department, while two programmes are organised in synergy with the Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences - DiSTA: the Bachelor’s degree in Environmental and Nature Sciences (DiSTA) and the Master’s degree in Environmental Sciences (DiSAT); the Bachelor’s degree in ISLA (DiSAT) and the Master’s degree in IASAL (established in the 2018/19 academic year by DiSTA).
The Master’s degree programmes in Physics and Mathematics are taught in English and allow students to obtain a double degree with Linnaeus University in Kalmar-Växjö (Sweden).
The quality of teaching and research, together with the Department’s links with the local area, which have enabled the development of various activities in synergy, including the introduction of curricular modules on topics of particular relevance to the local area itself (for example, Chemistry and Technology of Dyestuffs, Waste Treatment and Water Purification, and Chemistry and Technology of Formulations, introduced within the degree programme in Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry), is reflected in the excellent graduate employment outcomes shown by AlmaLaurea surveys, as well as in the awards won for Master’s degree and doctoral theses.
Enrolling on a Degree Programme

PhD programmes are research training programmes lasting at least three academic years, designed to provide candidates with the skills required to carry out high-level research. They also represent an essential step for those wishing to pursue an academic career.
The PhD programmes associated with DiSAT are as follows:
- PhD in Chemical and Environmental Sciences
- PhD in Physics and Astrophysics
- PhD in Experimental and Translational Medicine (until the 2024/25 academic year)

The Department also helps to enrich the University’s educational offer by providing advanced training courses, professional development courses and continuing education opportunities. These courses are activated throughout the year.
The advanced training courses offered by DiSAT are:
- Development of Environmental Culture in Business – a programme designed to train professionals able to understand and manage the new challenges of sustainability with up-to-date skills, challenges which are now crucial for businesses and public administrations.
- Quantum Technologies – an interdisciplinary thematic programme that complements the Master’s degree programmes in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Chemistry, Biology and Engineering, enriching their curricula with cross-disciplinary skills addressed in a multidisciplinary and innovative way. The course aims to provide the appropriate tools for addressing the new scenarios opened up by quantum technologies.
