The AIRCampus project, promoted by Fondazione AIRC for cancer research, is once again engaging the University of Insubria community with a new series of events dedicated to cancer research and its connections with various scientific disciplines.
Launched in 2016 to encourage direct dialogue between researchers and university students, AIRCampus offers students the opportunity to gain first-hand insight into the work of researchers, deepen their scientific knowledge and develop greater awareness of prevention and health-related issues.
Four events are scheduled between 27 November and 18 December, as part of the teaching activities of the degree programmes in Sports science, Medicine and surgery, and Environmental and natural sciences.
Schedule of events
- 27 November, 10 am – Room 6PM, Morselli Building, via Ottorino Rossi 9, Varese
«Microbiota, genetics and diet in the development of colon cancer»
AIRC researchers Irma Dianzani and Marta La Vecchia will explore the relationships between the gut microbiota, genetic factors and diet in the development of colon cancer, highlighting how research contributes to understanding the mechanisms underlying the disease.
The event will be hosted by Serena Martegani, as part of the Sports physiology course within the degree programme in Sports science.
- 30 November, 11 am – Room to be confirmed
«Nutrition and cancer: how diet can support cancer treatment»
Luigi Leanza, an AIRC researcher at the University of Padua, will discuss the relationship between nutrition and cancer, focusing on the role of diet in supporting cancer treatment.
The lecture will be hosted by Greta Forlani, as part of the Pathophysiology course within the degree programme in Medicine and surgery.

The event will be hosted by Andrea Cattaneo, as part of the Environmental chemistry and human health risk course within the degree programme in Environmental and natural sciences.
- 18 December, 9 am – Room 5PM, Morselli Building, Varese
«Physical exercise and nutritional interventions in patients with early-stage lung cancer: from theory to practice through the STARLighT study»
Sara Pilotto, an AIRC researcher at the University of Verona, and Alice Avancini, a kinesiologist and contract researcher at the same university, will present the role of physical exercise and nutrition in the care of patients with early-stage lung cancer, drawing on the experience of the STARLighT study.
The event will be hosted by Davide Vigetti, as part of the Chemistry course within the degree programme in Sports science.
Further initiatives in preparation
The AIRCampus programme at the University of Insubria will also include two additional events currently being organised: one for students enrolled in the Medicine and surgery degree programme, in collaboration with Professor Greta Forlani, and another for students enrolled in Dental hygiene, Dentistry and dental prosthetics, and Medicine and surgery, in collaboration with Professor Lorenzo Azzi.
