Telling the story of prison through the perspectives, stories and experiences of those who live it. This is the aim of two exhibitions inaugurated on October 19 at the Sant’Abbondio Cloister of the University of Insubria, as part of the conference “Rehabilitation in the Italian prison system: scarce resources, social stigma and the risk of secondary victimization. Como prison through the eyes of those who live there”, organised by the University’s Department of Law, Economics and Cultures. The exhibitions will remain open until November 19.
On the ground floor of the Cloister, visitors can explore “Bassone: What Humanity?”, an exhibition featuring 24 panels produced in spring 2024 by Caritas Como, in collaboration with the Diocese’s weekly newspaper, Cometa’s carpentry school and a historic graphic design studio in Como. The project brings together a selection of photographs from the exhibition “Click, Let Me Tell You”, originally created to help the families of incarcerated people understand everyday life inside the prison, alongside more recent images. The result offers an insight into the lives and experiences of those who inhabit Como’s prison.
On the first floor, visitors can explore “Reflected Bodies”, a collection of photographic works created by transgender women detained at Bassone Prison as part of an art workshop focused on body awareness, coordinated by the Cooperativa Lotta contro l’Emarginazione. The images and words of the women involved come together in a collective narrative exploring their relationship with their bodies, identity and the desire to reclaim their rights. The exhibition also features a QR code that allows visitors to listen to the voices of the incarcerated artists, giving them a direct platform to share their personal testimonies.
The two exhibitions offer different yet complementary perspectives, placing the dignity of incarcerated people at the centre and inviting visitors to move beyond stereotypes and prejudice by learning directly about their experiences.
Opening hours and information
The exhibitions are free to visit Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 6:30 pm, until November 19, at the Sant’Abbondio Cloister, Via Sant’Abbondio 12, Como.
