Varese at the Heart of International Banking Research: Insubria University's Department of Economics to Host the 15th MoFiR Workshop on Banking, 6–8 July

The Department of Economics at the University of Insubria will host the 15th MoFiR Workshop on Banking, one of the leading international conferences dedicated to research on banking and financial markets. The event will take place at Ville Ponti in Varese and is organised by the Money and Finance Research Group (MoFiR) in collaboration with the Department of Economics of the University of Insubria and the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission.

The workshop is organised and coordinated by Andrea Bellucci, Rossella Locatelli, Serena Fatica, Andrea Presbitero and Alberto Zazzaro, and will bring together scholars from some of the world's leading academic institutions and international policy organisations.

The 2026 edition will open on Monday, 6 July, with an afternoon session on "Financial Linkages and Geopolitical Risks", exploring the impact of geopolitical tensions on the financial system. The programme also includes a Policy and Industry Panel featuring Stephan Fahr (European Central Bank), Andrea Presbitero (International Monetary Fund), Davide Alfonsi (Intesa Sanpaolo) and Aurelio Maccario (UniCredit), moderated by Paola Schwizer (University of Parma and SDA Bocconi School of Management).

The sessions on 7 and 8 July will be devoted to the presentation and discussion of research findings on key topics in financial intermediation, covering some of the most pressing issues in the field, including monetary policy frameworks, developments in credit markets, banking innovation, financial stability, and the digital transformation of the banking sector.

The keynote lecture will be delivered by Steven Ongena, Professor of Banking at the University of Zurich and Fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), one of the world's leading experts in banking economics.

For the past fifteen years, the MoFiR Workshop on Banking has served as a leading forum for dialogue among academics, policymakers, and financial industry professionals, fostering discussion on the key challenges facing the banking and financial system at the international level.

The event is supported by the University of Insubria and its Department of Excellence 2023–2027, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, the Giovanni Valcavi Foundation for the University of Insubria, Intesa Sanpaolo, the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), and the academic journal The Review of Corporate Finance Studies.
