FAQ – Erasmus+, Double Degrees and Other Experiences Abroad

Erasmus+ Study is a programme that allows you to spend a period of study abroad at one of the European universities with which the University of Insubria has signed specific mobility agreements for the various degree programmes.

During your stay abroad, which can last from a minimum of two months to a maximum of twelve months, you will be able to attend courses and take exams that will be recognised when you return.

Students are selected through a call for applications, which is published every year in January.

What steps do I need to follow to submit my application?

Read the call for applications carefully, as it sets out the requirements, deadlines and application procedures. To clarify any doubts, remember to attend the Insubria Erasmus Day, an online information session that is usually held a few days after the call opens.

Submit your application by following the dedicated online procedure. When completing the application, you will be asked to enter five preferences from among the destinations available for your degree programme. Make sure you find out in advance about the language requirements of the host universities and the courses they offer.

Once the selection process has closed, the rankings will be published, listing the students awarded a scholarship and the destination assigned to them.

If you are awarded a place, formally accept or decline the assigned destination by the deadline indicated in the call. Remember that, if you are eligible, you may also receive a monthly financial contribution, which in the 2024/2025 academic year was either €650 or €500.

Of course! To study or undertake traineeships abroad, in addition to Erasmus+ Study, you mainly have three options:

  • undertake an Erasmus+ Traineeship;
  • become a free mover student;
  • take part in a Double Degree programme, where available for your degree course.

With the Erasmus+ Traineeship programme, you can undertake training placements at a company or organisation in one of the European countries participating in the programme.

You can carry out your mobility for a minimum period of 2 months and a maximum period of 12 months. As with Erasmus+ Study, to take part you must follow the instructions set out in the call for applications, which is published every year, generally in December.

Please remember that, before submitting your application, you must independently choose and contact the host organisation abroad — also by referring to the offers available on the European traineeship website — and that, by the application deadline, you must provide evidence that you have been accepted by the host organisation by attaching the relevant form to the online procedure.

If you do not wish to take part in an exchange programme organised by the University, such as Erasmus+ Study or Erasmus+ Traineeship, you can still independently organise a study period abroad at a destination of your choice, taking full responsibility for arranging your stay abroad, including enrolment fees at the host institution, food, accommodation, healthcare and so on.

In this case, you would be a free mover student.

Please note: in order to attend courses and/or carry out activities at a host institution and request recognition of them upon your return to Italy, you must obtain both authorisation from the local coordinator and acceptance from the host institution, and follow the procedure described in detail on the University website.

Finally, do not forget that some degree courses, either Master’s degrees or single-cycle Master’s degrees, also offer Double Degree programmes. These are study paths that allow students to spend long periods of mobility at partner universities abroad and, at the end of their studies, to be awarded two national degrees.
