Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences - DBSV
Immagine
Lanzavecchia Pavillion, Varese

The Department was established in 2011 with the aim of bringing together the biological sciences, biotechnology, and medicine within a single research environment.

With this in mind, the common goal of all the areas that make up the DBSV is to create synergies between basic and applied research, and between laboratory and clinical research, promoting an interdisciplinary approach capable of training students and researchers with a comprehensive and innovative scientific and technological vision in the life sciences and biotechnology.
This choice has enabled the achievement of significant results in both research and teaching—typically possible only at large universities—without losing the agility of a smaller institution.

As part of its third-mission activities, the Department is committed to the dissemination, communication, and popularization of scientific knowledge in order to contribute to the social, cultural, and economic development of society, with particular attention to the region in which the University of Insubria operates.

The Department of Law, Economics, and Culture was established in 2011, building on the legacy of the Faculty of Law, and today encompasses expertise in the legal and economic sciences, with a focus on the historical, linguistic, and sociological sciences. All these diverse fields of knowledge come together harmoniously in the degree programs offered by the Department, further shaping the scope of scientific research, which is conducted across numerous individual strands and within thematic research areas and centers, reflecting anstrong commitment to interdisciplinarity.

Positioning itself as a privileged partner with the local community and the various institutions operating within it (from professional associations to businesses, from companies in the tourism sector to public administrations), the Department has gained experience in promoting externally oriented training programs and has thus responded, particularly through continuing education and advanced training courses, to the diverse needs and requests coming not only from the Province of Como but also from that of Varese, due to the presence of a Master’s Degree program in Law at that location as well.

Department of Economics - DiECO
Immagine
monte-generoso

The Department of Economics offers degree programs in economics and management. The curriculum is characterized by a balanced combination of courses in economics, management, mathematics and statistics, and law. The goal is to produce graduates who stand out not only for their solid foundational knowledge but also for their practical skills, cultivated and developed throughout their studies, and immediately applicable in the job market (companies, organizations, local institutions, as well as research centers and/or universities with an economic focus, both national and international, etc.).

DiECO, initially established to meet the educational and research needs of the local area, has for the past decade undertaken a significant process of internationalization. This process is reflected both in teaching (a master’s degree program taught in English) and through scientific collaborations with universities and qualified research institutions—both domestic and international—as well as through the Department’s participation in international research projects, which also benefits local economic and institutional stakeholders.

Department of Medicine and Surgery - DMC

The Department of Medicine and Surgery operates in the biomedical and clinical fields with the aim of creating synergy between research, knowledge dissemination, and education, promoting scientific innovation and clinical application through multidisciplinary collaboration and the integration of basic, translational, and clinical aspects. The availability of a wide range of medical and biological expertise ensures that new health challenges can be addressed. It is the University’s flagship department for the field of Medical Sciences, and its faculty members belong to scientific-disciplinary sectors within the CUN 05 (Biological Sciences) and 06 (Medical Sciences) areas.

The academic programs are offered in the medical and health sciences field and include the single-cycle Master’s Degree Program in Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor’s Degree Programs, Specialization Schools, Doctoral Programs, and numerous university Master’s programs.

The research activities span various fields of clinical, basic, and translational research, aimed at improving and preserving individual health.

The promotion of knowledge and social impact is reflected in numerous activities carried out by various research groups, all aimed at improving and disseminating knowledge in the biomedical field.

Department of Science and Advanced Technology - DISAT
Immagine
disat_valleggio2

The Department was established in 2011 through the merger of three departments (the Department of Physics and Mathematics, the Department of Chemical and Environmental Sciences, and the Department of Environment, Health, and Safety), a true challenge that brought together the hard sciences and applied fields under one roof.

At DiSAT , basic research merges with applied research, complementing the hard sciences with contributions from other disciplines, promoting interdisciplinary research, and training students with a 360-degree scientific perspective.

The Department has become a shared space for collaboration and synergy, where basic research across various disciplines serves as a springboard for studying and improving the local area, to address energy, to provide ideas for technological innovation, and to create high-value-added businesses.  This choice has allowed us to benefit from economies of scale usually found only in large universities, without losing the agility of a smaller-scale structure.

Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences - DISTA
Immagine
Rossi pavillion

The Department of Theoretical and Applied Sciences is characterized by a multidisciplinary and dynamic approach, which manifests itself in integrated activities in research, teaching, and the dissemination of knowledge. Its expertise spans the environmental, computer science, and humanities fields and provides a solid foundation for the development of shared methodologies, new forms of interdisciplinary interaction, and an ongoing dialogue between scientific and humanistic knowledge.

The main objective of the Department —which constitutes the scientific rationale underlying its establishment—is the realization, the development and promotion of scientific research capable of balancing and enhancing the relationship between analytical-theoretical studies and applied projects, within a deliberately broad and interdisciplinary concept of Science, aimed at achieving specific goals of excellence in the results of individual projects and research areas, and at overcoming the challenges posed by contemporary society.

Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Region - DiSUIT

DiSUIT was established on January 1, 2019, with the goal of fostering interdisciplinary dialogue between the humanities and the social sciences to enhance and study the local area in all its historical, linguistic, cultural, and environmental complexity, serving as a hub and meeting point for humanities, computer science and mathematics, and geological and ecological expertise, which have historically been present at the university.

The department is dedicated to promoting the humanities and social sciences in the contemporary context; the department’s goal is also to respond to the needs of an increasingly complex and ever-changing world from a “glocal” perspective, bearing in mind that the Insubric territory is by no means a periphery of the world, but is situated within Europe, including neighboring Switzerland.
