Words can fuel conflict, cause harm and deepen divisions, but they can also become instruments of listening, recognition and the rebuilding of relationships. Language plays a particularly sensitive role in criminal justice, where the way events are described, responsibilities are acknowledged and those involved are given a voice can profoundly influence restorative processes.
The relationship between language, law and peacebuilding will be at the heart of the event scheduled for Friday, 30 October, at 5.30 pm, in the Aula Magna of the University of Insubria's Sant'Abbondio campus in Como.
The lecture will be delivered by Grazia Mannozzi, Full Professor of Criminal Law at the University of Insubria and lecturer in Restorative Justice and Criminal Mediation. Her presentation, entitled “Words That Hurt, Words That Heal: The Language of Criminal Law and the Challenge of Peace”, will explore the relationship between language, justice and conflict resolution.
The event is part of “Fare pace con il mondo. Nella radicale complessità del reale” (Making Peace with the World: In the Radical Complexity of Reality), a series of lectures promoted by the City of Como and the University of Insubria, in collaboration with the Il Paguro Cultural Association. It will offer an opportunity to reflect on the power of language in situations of conflict and the possibilities offered by restorative justice.
The discussion will focus on how words can contribute to acknowledging harm, fostering accountability and rebuilding relationships. This approach moves beyond a view of justice based solely on punishment, taking into account the needs of the individuals and communities involved.
The lecture will explore the theme of peace through the tools of law and dialogue, highlighting the importance of practices aimed at repairing harm and restoring relationships.
The event will take place at the University of Insubria, Via Sant'Abbondio 12, Como. Participant registration will open at 5 pm, and the lecture will begin at 5.30 pm.
