Does equity exist? What is its relationship with the law, and what role has it played in the history of legal thought? These are some of the questions that will be explored during a lecture by Professor Dario Mantovani on Wednesday, 11 November, from 10 a.m. to 12 noon, in the Aula Magna at the Sant’Abbondio campus of the University of Insubria, located at 12 Via Sant’Abbondio, Como.
The event, entitled «Does Equity Exist?», is organised as part of the Roman Law Institutions course within the Department of Law, Economics and Cultures (Didec), in collaboration with the PhD programme in Law and Human Sciences (Discum) and the Master’s Degree Programme in Law. The event will open with institutional greetings from Professor Giuseppe Colangelo, Director of Didec, and conclude with remarks by Vice-Rector Umberto Piarulli.
The lecture will be delivered by a leading scholar in the international field of legal studies. Dario Mantovani is Professor at the Collège de France, where, since 2018, he has held the Chair of «Law, Culture and Society of Ancient Rome». He is also Full Professor of Roman Law at the University of Pavia, a member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and Director of the Centre for Studies and Research on Ancient Law (Cedant). His research focuses on Roman law, viewed not merely as a body of rules and legal institutions, but also as an expression of ancient culture and society and as a fundamental component of the European legal tradition.
«Having Professor Dario Mantovani with us – explains Professor Paolo Lepore, who organised the event together with Professors Linda De Maddalena and Marco Migliorini – represents an important opportunity for further study and discussion for Law students and PhD candidates, who will have the chance to engage directly with a leading scholar in the field of legal history. The topic of equity, given its philosophical, legal and civic significance, also offers food for thought that goes beyond the boundaries of specialist education».
