The University of Insubria was also among the leading names at the World University Cross Country Championships, held in Cassino from 13 to 15 March. Standing out was Carmelo Cannizzaro, a master’s student in Preventive and Adapted Physical Activity Sciences, who won two medals with the Italian national team: silver in the long cross team event and bronze in the long relay.

In the long cross country event, the athlete from Catania, born in 2001, finished thirteenth individually, making a decisive contribution to the Italian team’s second-place finish. He then also won the bronze medal in the long relay, a race consisting of two opening legs of 4.8 kilometres and two final legs of 3.2 kilometres.

Registered with Aden Optical Molfetta, Cannizzaro is part of the University of Insubria’s middle-distance running college, a programme led by coach Silvano Danzi, under whose technical guidance he is continuing his sporting development alongside his academic studies.

For Italy, the world university event in Cassino ended with an outstanding medal tally: two golds, two silvers and one bronze, including the medals won by Cannizzaro. Across the 24 editions of the competition, it is the richest result ever achieved by the Italian team.
