On Thursday, 9 July, the Rector of the University of Insubria, Professor Maria Pierro, welcomed a delegation from the Universidad Católica Sedes Sapientiae (UCSS) of Lima. The delegation included Dr Gian Battista Bolis, Rector of UCSS, Professor Giancarlo Mascellaro, Director of the International Relations Office, and Father Miguel Carpio, Vicar for Education of the Diocese of Carabayllo (Northern Lima), under whose authority UCSS operates.

The meeting took place within the framework of the cooperation agreement between the two universities. The scientific coordinator of the partnership is Professor Paolo Musso of the Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Territory (Disuit). The collaboration has led to numerous successful initiatives, most notably a major research project carried out by the InCosmiCon Research Centre, directed by Professor Musso, in partnership with indigenous scholars from UCSS-Nopoki, the University's Amazonian campus in Atalaya, Upper Ucayali, in southeastern Peru.

After four years of research, the project reached an important milestone last month with the publication of a special issue of the Expressio Notebooks (a special edition of the international linguistics journal Expressio, edited by Professor Giulio Facchetti of Disuit). Edited by Professor Musso, the volume is entitled Los libros de Nopoki and is entirely dedicated to the seven principal languages taught at Nopoki: Asháninka, Ashéninka, Matsigenka, Nomatsigenga, Shipibo, Yánesha and Yine.

The publication represents a significant scholarly achievement. For the first time, complete grammars have been written for these languages, which had previously been only partially documented, and modern mathematical terminology has been developed for each of them. A copy of the volume was presented to Rector Maria Pierro, who received it with great interest.

During the meeting, which was also attended by Professor Paola Biavaschi, Director of the Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Territory (Disuit), and Dr Guido Bonoldi, Councillor for Healthcare of the Municipality of Varese, participants discussed the highly successful two-month internship completed at Nopoki by two University of Insubria Biology students as part of their bachelor's degree thesis. They also reviewed the Magallanes Programme, which in the next academic year will, for the third time, enable Nursing students from UCSS to spend a semester studying at the University of Insubria.

In line with Rector Maria Pierro's vision, the meeting also explored ways to further expand the partnership by launching a similar exchange programme for students from the UCSS Faculty of Education, who could spend a semester at the University of Insubria within the framework of Lincoform, the new master's degree programme offered by the Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Territory.

The Peruvian delegation also invited Rector Maria Pierro and Professor Biavaschi to visit UCSS next year, when the university will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the founding of Nopoki.

News of the meeting has also been published in the official UCSS news bulletin:
