The Department of Economics at the University of Insubria is strengthening its scientific collaboration with Vanderbilt University through the organization of the international workshop «Energy and Polarization Problems in Mathematics and Statistics – Part I», which will take place from 16 to 19 August at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee (USA).

Among the organizers is Professor Raffaello Seri of the University of Insubria's Department of Economics, together with Professor Edward B. Saff and Professor Douglas Hardin of Vanderbilt University.

The collaboration between InsIDE Lab, the research laboratory of the University of Insubria's Department of Economics directed by Professor Seri, and the Center for Constructive Approximation (CCA) in Vanderbilt University's Department of Mathematics was further strengthened in 2025 during Professor Edward B. Saff's research visit to the University of Insubria. This partnership has led to several new joint scientific initiatives, including the organization of this international workshop.

The meeting will bring together researchers working on energy and polarization minimization problems, important research topics in discrete geometry, mathematical physics, approximation theory, differential equations, and other areas of contemporary mathematics.

Participants include Peter Boyvalenkov (Bulgarian Academy of Sciences), José A. Carrillo (University of Oxford), Peter Dragnev (Purdue University), Yanghong Huang (University of Manchester), Dirk Nuyens (KU Leuven), Eitan Tadmor (University of Maryland), and Robert Womersley (University of New South Wales).

The workshop aims to foster scientific exchange among researchers from different disciplines and to encourage new collaborations on some of the most significant challenges in contemporary mathematical research.

The collaboration between the University of Insubria's Department of Economics and Vanderbilt University will continue beyond the Nashville meeting. A second edition of the workshop is already planned for 2027, jointly organized by the two universities and to be hosted in Italy, between Como and Varese, confirming the long-term and strategic nature of this scientific partnership.
