A concrete contribution to clinical care, research and innovation in transplant medicine has been made possible by a donation from Lorenza and Gino Macchi through the Lions Club Varese Città Giardino, enabling the kidney transplant programme at ASST dei Sette Laghi to acquire a state-of-the-art portable ultrasound scanner.
The official handover took place in the presence of Professor Giulio Carcano, Director of the Complex Unit of Emergency and Transplant Surgery at ASST dei Sette Laghi and Director of the Department of Medicine and Innovation Technologies (DIMIT) at the University of Insubria. The new equipment will be used in the team's daily care of patients undergoing kidney transplantation.
Ultrasound and colour Doppler imaging are essential tools for the postoperative monitoring of transplant recipients. Having access to a high-performance device that is versatile, easy to use and readily portable will enable the team to carry out timely assessments directly at the patient's bedside, from the first hours following surgery.
«Having this equipment available represents significant added value in the management of our patients», says Professor Giulio Carcano. «It will allow us to perform ultrasound examinations quickly and directly at the patient's bedside, integrating clinical information and helping us identify potential complications at an early stage whenever necessary».
The portable ultrasound scanner is not intended to replace the specialist work of radiologists, whose contribution remains essential and irreplaceable. Rather, it is a complementary tool that will support day-to-day clinical management and enable even more accurate monitoring of patients with particularly complex and delicate clinical conditions.
The donation also forms part of a broader programme of clinical and scientific development that has been pursued for years by the Kidney Transplant Centre team and the Research Centre for the Study and Development of Organ Transplantation at the University of Insubria. Both are involved in numerous projects aimed at advancing diagnostic and therapeutic innovation in transplant medicine.
«Very recently, a study conducted by our research group was published in a prestigious international scientific journal, examining the potential of contrast-enhanced colour Doppler ultrasound in kidney transplant recipients», explains Professor Carcano. «The findings showed that these technologies can provide valuable information on the perfusion of the transplanted organ and help guide and optimise therapeutic and pharmacological strategies from the earliest stages of the postoperative period».
In this context, the new equipment represents much more than an upgrade to the department's technological resources. The Lions' donation is a tangible investment in the quality of patient care and, at the same time, a contribution to the development of research and innovation aimed at continuously improving transplant outcomes and patients' quality of life.
«We would like to express our sincere gratitude to the Lions for their generosity and for choosing to support our kidney transplant programme», concludes Professor Carcano. «The support and close collaboration of our local community also enable us to continue investing in equipment and projects that improve patient care and advance transplant medicine».
On behalf of the entire Kidney Transplant Centre team, Professor Carcano therefore reiterates his heartfelt thanks to Lorenza and Gino Macchi and the Lions Club Varese Città Giardino for their valuable contribution and for supporting a project that places patients' well-being, quality of care and progress in transplant medicine at its heart.
