The number of places available for Medicine and Surgery is increasing at the University of Insubria. For the 2026/2027 academic year, 247 places have been allocated to the University, compared with 220 last year: an increase of 27 places, equal to 12.3 per cent.

The number of places available for the single-cycle master’s degree programme in Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics remains unchanged, with 21 places also confirmed for the next academic year.

The new quotas were established by the Italian Ministry of Universities and Research through Ministerial Decree No. 1004 of 6 August 2026, concerning the number of places available for single-cycle master’s degree programmes in Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics, and Veterinary Medicine for the 2026/2027 academic year.

The increase at Insubria is part of an overall expansion of Medicine places at Italian universities. For 2026/2027, 27,001 places are available for Medicine and Surgery nationwide, out of a total of 30,225 places for Medicine, Dentistry and Veterinary Medicine. In Lombardy’s public universities, the total number of Medicine places rises from 1,707 to 1,856, an overall increase of 8.7 per cent; at Insubria, the increase is 12.3 per cent.

The increase in places coincides with the second year of the open semester, the new admission system for Medicine and Dentistry degree programmes. For the 2026/2027 academic year, the semester includes three subjects — Biology, Chemistry and Preparatory Biochemistry, and Physics — for a total of 18 university credits (CFU). Enrolment is open, while admission to the second semester of Medicine and Dentistry programmes is determined by examination results and students’ position in the national merit ranking.

New features for the 2026 edition include a greater number of weeks of classes and two national examination sessions, scheduled for December and January. In addition, when students take the same examination more than once, the highest grade obtained is automatically taken into account for the ranking.

At the University of Insubria, the open semester will also feature a new organisational arrangement: a videoconference link between the main campus in Varese and the Aula Magna on Via Valleggio in Como, where some classes will also be held in person, with a subject tutor available to support students.
