Libraries may receive donations of individual documents (books and magazines, current or antique) or entire collections from external donors.
Donated documents are accepted by libraries if their acquisition is consistent with the nature and purpose of the library itself.
The Scientific Council of the library receiving the donation proposal assesses the interest/relevance of the donation in terms of effectively enriching the cultural/scientific heritage of the library, also in relation to the thematic consistency of the bibliographic material offered.
As a rule, donation proposals are not accepted when:
- The bibliographic material offered is of no scientific relevance or is not thematically relevant to the disciplines present in the structure;
- The object of the donation has characteristics that generate overlap between collections or excessive clutter;
- The material is in poor condition.
In particular, donations of material already present in the library are only accepted when the acquisition of additional copies meets specific service or conservation needs.
The donation proposal can be sent using the appropriate form, which must be completed, signed and sent directly to the library receiving the donation proposal.
The donor will receive a written response regarding the acceptance or rejection of the donation proposal. In the event of non-acceptance, a deadline will be indicated for the collection of the delivered volumes. Once the deadline has passed, the items may be sold or disposed of.
To promote the growth of the libraries' bibliographic heritage, it is also possible to make cash donations with or without restrictions on their use.
