A training internship, often referred to by the French term stage, does not constitute an employment relationship, but rather an experience at a public or private institution, carried out with the main purpose of:
- allowing students to acquire the university credits (CFU) required by the study plan in the case of a curricular internship;
- enable students and recent graduates to learn about one or more work environments, directly experiencing integration and training in specific tasks;
- enrich their professional background, not only enabling them to make more informed choices, but also supplementing their CV for presentation on the job market.
An internship involves three parties: the intern, the promoting entity (in our case, the University) and the host entity (institution/company). The mutual commitments are defined by a specific agreement and by the individual training project.
Recent regulatory changes, both at regional and national level, have distinguished between curricular and extra-curricular internships.
The information below refers to the Lombardy Region regulations in force since 9 June 2018.
To activate internships with an operational base outside the Lombardy Region (in Italy or abroad), please contact the relevant office for instructions on the procedure to follow.
They are included in the study plans and take place during the course attendance period, also for the purposes of completing the degree thesis.
They are aimed at refining the student's learning and training process, alternating between study and work.
They are governed, including with regard to their duration, by university regulations, in compliance with the relevant legislation.
Administrative management (signing of individual agreements with companies/public bodies and training projects) is the responsibility of the Internship Offices located in the University's departments.
Curricular internships provide academic credits, which are necessary for obtaining a degree. For this reason, each internship offer will be evaluated by the relevant teaching department in terms of the following aspects: consistency with the student's educational path, validity of the content, consistency of the duration (number of months and hours) with the number of credits required for curricular internships in the specific course.
They are aimed at individuals who are unemployed pursuant to Article 19 of Legislative Decree 150/2015, including those who have completed upper secondary and tertiary education.
They are not linked to formal university education courses, as they are primarily aimed at promoting job placement and career choices through a period of training in a productive environment and direct knowledge of the world of work.
The minimum duration for extracurricular internships is two months.
The maximum duration (including any extensions) is:
- six months for extracurricular internships whose Individual Training Plan provides for the acquisition of skills referenced to EQF levels 2 and 3, extendable up to a maximum of a further six months if, during the extension, the acquisition of skills referenced to at least EQF level 4 is envisaged;
- twelve months for extracurricular internships whose Individual Training Plan provides for the acquisition of skills referenced to EQF level 4 or higher;
The host organisation must pay the intern an allowance in accordance with current legislation and is bound to comply with the following requirements: compliance with workplace health and safety regulations; compliance with the provisions of Law No. 68/1999 and subsequent amendments; restriction on offering only one internship to the same intern; numerical restrictions based on the human resources available in the operating unit; restriction on having made no redundancies in the 12 months prior to the start of the internship, or having CIG procedures in place for tasks equivalent to those of the internship.
Administrative management is the responsibility of the University's Guidance and Placement Office.
An online service is available for publishing internship offers, which allows you to view applications from students/graduates independently.
Even if the organisation/company has already identified the intern, it is necessary to access the Platform to activate the internship: in this case, the offer will not be entered, but the agreement will be entered directly (if not already present, indicating in the “notes for staff” the surname and name of the intern, their registration number and whether it is a curricular or postgraduate internship) and the training project.
The entire process is managed online (from the collection of applications, where necessary, to the preparation of documents for the start of the internship, to the evaluation of the experience).
The service is available upon registration by the company. The login credentials are the same as those used to consult CVs free of charge and publish job offers.
