On Thursday, June 11, at Villa Toeplitz in Varese, the Department of Medicine and Surgery (DMC) of the University of Insubria, headed by Professor Luigina Guasti, will host the Scientific and Open Day of the Department of Medicine and Surgery.
The event will be dedicated to the presentation of the Department’s Strategic Plan and to a focus on artificial intelligence in Medicine and Surgery, featuring talks, discussions, and round tables on development prospects in teaching, research, and clinical practice.
The day will open at 10:10 a.m. with welcome addresses by the Rector, Maria Pierro, followed by the opening remarks by Professor Luigina Guasti and Professor Andrea Imperatori. After the presentation of the Department’s Strategic Plan, the program will move on to implementation proposals and to the focus on artificial intelligence in Medicine and Surgery, moderated by Professors Giovanni Veronesi, Matteo Tozzi, Davide Vigetti, and Roberto De Ponti.
The first part of the morning will be devoted to the teaching activities on artificial intelligence carried out by the DMC, presented by Professors Matteo Tozzi and Giovanni Veronesi, and to the use of AI in predictive models, with a discussion of methodological developments and applications to population studies, led by Professors Emanuele Maria Giusti and Giovanni Veronesi. This will be followed by Professor Giovanni Porta’s talk on AI in doctor-patient communication in complex genetic counseling, and Professor Roberto Valli’s presentation on AI in the recognition of chromosomal abnormalities typical of Fanconi syndrome.
The second session, moderated by Professors Antonio Spanevello, Paolo Grossi, and Fabio Ghezzi, will present further clinical applications of artificial intelligence. Professor Andrea Carugno will speak about AI in dermatology and present the start-up DermIA; Professor Simone Donati will explore AI in ophthalmology, from digital platforms to the multidisciplinary approach; Professors Andrea Imperatori and Elisa Nardecchia will illustrate the LUCAMIR project, dedicated to the role of artificial intelligence in the diagnosis of pulmonary nodules within a lung cancer screening project.
After the light lunch, proceedings will resume at 2:30 p.m. with a session moderated by Professors Alberto Passi, Sandro Ferrarese, Andrea Maresca, and Giovanni De Vito. Professor Marco Cosentino will offer a reflection on the use of artificial intelligence in research and teaching.
At 3:00 p.m., the round table “Opportunities, challenges and threats of artificial intelligence” will take place, moderated by Professors Antonella Cromi, Franca Marino, and Camilla Callegari. This will be followed, at 3:30 p.m., by a round table dedicated to the Research Centers, their activities, shared goals, and synergies with the objectives of the DMC, with Director Luigina Guasti and Professors Marco Cosentino, Antonio Spanevello, Maria Laura Tanda, Giovanni Veronesi, Giovanni Porta, Massimo Agosti, Andrea Imperatori, Alberto Passi, Giovanni Piffaretti, Angelo Squizzato, and Laura Tettamanti.
The event will close at 4:30 p.m., with concluding remarks by DMC Director Luigina Guasti.
