From 25 to 27 May, the University of Insubria hosted the Workshop of the Italian Chemical Society’s Chemometrics Thematic Group at its Sant’Abbondio campus in Como, a national event that brought together over ninety scientists from across Italy.

A high-profile scientific forum, characterised by a significant openness to dialogue between research and industrial application: around 30 per cent of participants came from the business world, alongside a large contingent of researchers and university lecturers. This diverse attendance confirms the growing interest in the applications of chemometrics and artificial intelligence across various fields of chemistry.

The programme featured around forty presentations, with contributions from over fifty speakers, offering an overview of the latest frontiers in the development and implementation of artificial intelligence-based methodologies to tackle complex chemical problems.

The debate focused on the evolution of multivariate methods, the integration of analytical methods and artificial intelligence, and the development of new computational tools for the analysis of complex data. The applications presented ranged from the pharmaceutical and food industries, to the analysis of cultural heritage and forensic investigations, from the medical and biomedical sectors to environmental monitoring, and even the development of new materials. A specific section was also dedicated to the prospects for innovative teaching.

The initiative was supported by eleven sponsors, including the Department of Science and Advanced Technology (Disat) at the University of Insubria, which reaffirmed its commitment to fostering opportunities for dialogue and scientific advancement. Special thanks were extended to Vice-Rector Umberto Piarulli and DISAT Director Michela Prest for making the University’s premises and the Department’s facilities available, as well as for their organisational support.
