The Department of Medicine and Surgery operates in the biomedical and clinical fields with the aim of creating synergy between research, knowledge enhancement and education, promoting scientific innovation and its transfer into clinical practice through multidisciplinary collaboration and the integration of basic, translational and clinical aspects. It is the University’s reference Department for the area of Medical Sciences, and its academic staff belong to scientific-disciplinary sectors within CUN areas 05 (Biological Sciences) and 06 (Medical Sciences).
The availability of a wide range of medical and biological expertise ensures the ability to address new health challenges affecting both individuals and the wider population, and facilitates collaboration with other University departments and with other research institutions.
The educational offer is developed within the medical and healthcare field (Single-cycle Master’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery, Bachelor’s Degree programmes, Specialisation Schools, PhD programmes, and numerous university Master’s programmes).
Research activity is carried out across the various areas of clinical, basic and translational research, aimed at improving and preserving the health of individuals. In particular, scientific interests range from projects concerning genetics and cellular function, immunity, tissue regeneration, neurodegenerative, cardiovascular, respiratory, haematological and endocrine-metabolic diseases, mental health, medical statistics, general and applied hygiene, occupational medicine, and the study of environmental factors and epidemiology. Research is also directed towards vulnerable groups within the population, such as paediatric and geriatric patients.
Knowledge enhancement and social impact are pursued through numerous conferences, including those aimed at the general public. In addition, this is reflected in the many activities carried out by the various research groups, which involve specific sections of the population and/or are dedicated to improving knowledge both locally, through close interaction with different territorial bodies, and more broadly at national and international level. A further objective in the transfer of knowledge is to generate positive clinical outcomes through the extensive research conducted by the different groups in the various fields of health and quality of life of the population.
The DMC offers courses in the medical and healthcare field that provide the biomedical, healthcare and clinical knowledge, as well as the multidisciplinary perspective, required to address issues of health and disease.
In particular, it is the leading Department for the Single-cycle Master’s Degree in Medicine and Surgery and for five Bachelor’s Degree programmes, delivering this teaching in collaboration with the School of Medicine. In addition, it offers Specialisation Schools, a PhD programme, and numerous first- and second-level university Master’s programmes. These courses represent a broad educational portfolio aimed at the study of diseases and the promotion and maintenance of health and safety within the community.
The DMC’s research activity is wide-ranging, with scientific interests focusing on cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, genetics and immunity, neuro- and immunopharmacology, the study of connective tissue matrices, infectious diseases, endocrine-metabolic and haemato-oncological disorders, psychiatric and paediatric conditions, and surgical sciences (particularly vascular, gynaecological and thoracic surgery, as well as cardiac surgery), alongside clinical and epidemiological research.
Across all these areas, the strong interaction between basic sciences and clinical sciences, with translational implications, represents the key element in the development of research projects and comprehensive studies with wide dissemination.
The DMC is distinguished by bringing together medical and biological staff who carry out their work within the local health and social care facilities, in collaboration with ATS Insubria, ASST Sette Laghi, ASST Lariana, the Medical Association, as well as other institutions, patient associations and voluntary organisations.
It promotes numerous initiatives, including training events for healthcare professionals and scientific outreach activities, both with an international dimension and with a focus on prevention and health education across the local community and in schools.
The DMC is based at ASST Sette Laghi, Circolo Hospital, Varese. Its operational sites include ASST Sette Laghi, ASST Lariana, IRCCS Maugeri, the Bassani Pavilion, and the Monte Generoso Research Centre.
At these sites, the research groups have access to facilities and laboratories equipped and organised according to their specific needs. Within each of these, research lines are developed alongside undergraduate dissertations and the activities of specialist trainees, PhD candidates, and research fellows.
The DMC is committed to Quality Assurance in accordance with the plan-do-check-act approach set out in ANVUR’s AVA 3 model, adopting the European guidelines and following University regulations, in order to ensure the continuous improvement of quality in teaching, research, and knowledge enhancement/social impact.
To this end, various Departmental committees support the Director and the Council in the quality assurance process, as well as in continuous evaluation and improvement.
