Pursuant to Article 61 of the University Statutes, the Research Center is an organizational unit established to facilitate the conduct of related research activities by faculty members affiliated with one or more University departments, or by such departments in collaboration with faculty members from other Italian or foreign universities.
Over time, the center’s expertise has expanded from the spine to the entire musculoskeletal system. In terms of research, the main focus is on spinal and prosthetic surgery. Studies have also been conducted on basic research applied to avascular necrosis of the femoral head, chronic osteoarticular pain and related NMDAR and TRPV channels, and elective and trauma orthopedic surgery in various body regions. In addition to research, CRIPCAL also engages in educational activities aimed at specialist physicians and those in training through the organization of seminars, workshops, and practical courses. Regarding funding, it should be noted that CRIPCAL’s activities are primarily supported by grants provided by private companies in the form of donations.

The Neuroscience Research Centre at the University of Insubria was founded in 2003 with the aim of promoting research in fields related to neuroscience, and in particular the study of functional and neurodegenerative disorders of the nervous system using approaches from cell and molecular biology, biochemistry, physiology, neuropharmacology, neuroimmunology and systems biology. The Centre also aims to serve as a meeting point for biomedical and clinical research groups within the University, fostering the exchange of knowledge and the development of multidisciplinary collaborations. A key focus of the Centre is the training of young researchers working in laboratories affiliated with the Centre: to this end, annual meetings of the affiliated research laboratories are organised, at which young researchers are invited to present and discuss papers on their research activities. Furthermore, the Centre organises specialist seminars and public outreach events on neuroscientific topics, to raise awareness of the physiological and pathological mechanisms in the nervous system, and of the search for new avenues for therapeutic interventions in the field of neurological and psychiatric disorders.

This is the Department’s longest-standing centre, which predates the University of Insubria (having previously operated as the University of Milan); it coordinates research into the dynamic description of the motion of non-linear and complex systems. The problems addressed range from physical systems described by classical and quantum mechanics—studied from both a purely theoretical and a numerical-experimental perspective, with sometimes significant practical applications—to complex systems of interest to the statistical and social sciences. The Centre for Research on Minorities (CERM) aims to promote and advance interdisciplinary research into the sociology and sociolinguistics of minorities, fostering synergies between expertise in sociolinguistics, language teaching, sociology, history, education and law. The first of its kind, it seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of minority communities, migration dynamics and the composition of communities in settlement contexts, adopting an inclusive view of minorities that highlights their potential in terms of human capital, growth and development across different regions. CERM’s activities include training and refresher courses on issues such as non-discrimination and the protection of minority languages, the linguistic, social and cultural inclusion of immigrants, training in minority languages, language teaching aimed at preserving the mother tongue, and the teaching of Italian as a second language to learners belonging to specific minority groups.

The Centre is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary studies and research, employing innovative methodologies, in the field of language and the historical and synchronic linguistics of European languages and those of the Mediterranean basin, with a particular focus on English and Italian, as well as languages and cultures with a global impact (such as Latin American Spanish and Argentine culture in particular); in the field of Italian literature and modern foreign literatures, also considered in their historical and cultural contexts; it also addresses issues relating to multi-ethnic and multi- and intercultural interaction and their implications at the sociolinguistic and interlinguistic levels; it also studies the science of communication (medical and scientific communication in English-speaking countries in particular), including its interaction with new media and new disciplinary fields, as well as forms of artistic expression and artistic languages such as music, theatre and dance.
Director: Prof. Alessandra Vicentini
The Centre was established in the spring of 2019 as a permanent observatory, equipped with a scientific framework capable of monitoring, studying and promoting the history of contemporary and post-modern art in the region, in collaboration with Italian and international scholars, museums, foundations, archives, educational institutions, and public and private bodies.
Director: Dr Massimiliano Ferrario
The Centre aims to promote theoretical and applied research, of an interdisciplinary nature and employing innovative methodologies, into the written document – in its broad diachronic and diatopic sense – as a subject of investigation and/or as a primary source for a wide range of academic disciplines (such as linguistics, epigraphy, philology, palaeography, history, archaeology, law, art, archaeometry and computer science). Specifically, in terms of content/signified, the main research areas focus on the complex relationships between the ‘creation’ of the written phenomenon and the cultural and social development of civilisations, and on defining the significance of the written document in relation to historical phenomena and socio-economic and legal structures. In terms of expression/signifier, the research focuses on the technical developments in writing styles and material production processes, the variety and quality of writing surfaces, as well as the links between texts and figurative and decorative elements.
Director: Prof. Giulio Facchetti
The Centre is dedicated to promoting interdisciplinary studies and research, employing innovative methodologies, in the fields of philosophy and the humanities and social sciences, particularly in aesthetics, the philosophy of art, and the collective imagination and political-legal processes, considered also in their historical and cultural contexts; It also addresses issues relating to cultural studies and their impact on visual media; furthermore, it studies the science of communication in interaction with new media and emerging disciplinary fields, as well as forms of artistic expression and artistic languages such as painting, sculpture, architecture, music, dance, television, theatre and cinema.
