Course description
Biotechnology is the most innovative side of applied biology. By studying biotechnology, students will learn how to use biological systems for the production of goods and services, for example to:
- improve human, animal and plant health through the discovery of new drugs, nutraceutics, vaccines and diagnostic methods;
- protect the environment by developing bio-sustainable and environmentally friendly industrial processes;
- satisfy the demand for energy by using biomasses as a renewable source.
The first cycle programme in Biotechnology offers students the essential knowledge needed to achieve these aims by employing a molecular and applied approach, which will allow them to gain the technical and scientific skills required by the different fields of biotechnology.
The degree programme has two different streams: Molecular biotechnology and Medical biotechnology.
The programme's strengths are:
- focus on each student's learning achievements;
- numerous workshops are offered from the first year;
- placements in laboratories in universities/companies (also abroad);
- high employability at the end of the programme.
Graduates will find employment in the following areas: research and management in public or private facilities; commercial activities, quality control, scientific dissemination, consulting for patents and free-lance professional services.
Lessons are held in Italian.
What you need to know
The Degree Program has a limited number of places: taking into account the number of faculty members and the capacity of teaching facilities and laboratories, the maximum number of enrollments allowed for the academic year 2025/2026 is set at 155 students. This number includes non-EU international students as well as the quotas reserved for the 'Marco Polo' and 'Turandot' projects.
Junior Biotechnologist
A Junior Biotechnologist develops and applies biological systems for the production of goods and services in biomedical, pharmaceutical, agri-food, animal husbandry, fine chemistry, environmental decontamination, and renewable energy sectors. This professional role offers opportunities in applied biological and biotechnological research (in public and private research centers, pharmaceutical industry, biomedical devices, nutraceuticals, agri-food industry including animal production and aquaculture, sustainability and environmental decontamination, and management of renewable energy sources).
Professional Opportunities:
- Researchers in public and private sectors, working on the management and research of bioindustrial production processes related to human health and sustainable development;
- Roles in designing and managing production facilities within the biotechnological, diagnostic, chemical, environmental, agri-food, animal husbandry (including aquaculture), and pharmaceutical industries;
- Private sector employment, integrating technical expertise with legal knowledge for consultancy and monitoring across various biotechnology applications, from industrial and forensic to environmental sectors, including analysis and diagnostic laboratories;
- Employment in scientific communication, combining biotechnology knowledge with communication science to promote biotechnology to specialized audiences and the general public through traditional and digital media;
- Commercial sector roles, integrating biotechnology expertise with economic and financial knowledge for product and process presentation to specialized or general audiences, developing marketing strategies for biotechnological products, and assessing the economic and financial impact of biotechnological processes or products within companies.
Employment sectors include Industrial Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, Nutraceutical, Plant, Medical, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary fields, Medical and Ambulatory Analysis, Patent and Commercial sectors, Scientific Instrumentation, and Quality Control.
Product Manager
The Product Manager works closely with research institutions, hospitals, and other companies in the biotechnology field, interacting with scientific, technical, and administrative professionals. Their knowledge of biology allows them to understand challenges and propose solutions regarding the use of reagents, drugs, materials, equipment, and methodological approaches.
Professional Opportunities:
The primary employment sector is within companies producing and/or supplying reagents, drugs, laboratory materials, biomedical equipment, etc. Employment spans Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, Nutraceutical, Industrial, Medical, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary sectors, Medical and Ambulatory Analysis, Commercial activities, Scientific Instrumentation, and Quality Control.
Technical Operator in Research and Development Laboratories
(Industries: chemical, pharmaceutical, diagnostic, food, biotechnology)
Role: participating in basic and applied research projects, process optimization, quality control. Operators in this category analyze and test the quality of plant products intended for the food sector or non-food uses, including GMO detection. Tasks include production of biotechnological medicines, quality control, development and application of diagnostic tests, production of vectors and engineered systems for drug manufacturing, drug and biotech product screening, technical-scientific information, industrial marketing, development of biotech systems for pharmacotoxicological and environmental contamination studies, and clinical monitoring of biotechnological drugs.
Professional Opportunities:
Public and private R&D entities; pharmaceutical, cosmetic, food, and feed industries; scientific informers and communicators; toxicological and environmental study centers (national and international agencies); biotech service centers; National Health Service facilities; institutions responsible for health regulations or patenting biotechnology products.

The Degree Program appoints academic tutors for each year of study. Tutors act as a point of contact for students to identify and address any issues related to the delivery and organization of the program. Additionally, at the start of the academic year, tutors, in collaboration with faculty members and administrative staff, organize a welcome meeting for first-year students to introduce the Degree Program.
The aim of the tutoring service is to support students throughout their university journey, helping them overcome any difficulties encountered during their studies. This service offers guidance and assistance to newly enrolled and continuing students through various initiatives and activities organized by the Degree Program.
Faculty members, together with the Academic Secretariat (MDQ), also organize additional meetings throughout the academic year to support students’ learning experience.

Students enrolled in the second year who, by the end of the winter exam session, have achieved an average grade of at least 27/30 and earned at least 60 ECTS credits are admitted to the Honor Path. This program offers the opportunity to attend two seminars and participate in a guided visit to a company or organization operating in the biotechnology field, selected annually by the Degree Program Committee. During the visit, students will have the chance to meet with industry specialists.
The seminars will focus on topics covered by the Degree Program courses; one seminar will provide a general scientific deepening, while the other will have a technical and applied focus, addressing advanced methodological and experimental approaches.
Participation in the Honor Path will be considered a merit element, awarding 1 additional point to the final exam evaluation score.
