On Monday 27 April, starting at 2.30 pm, two guest lectures in English will be held in Como at the Aula Magna di Sant’Abbondio (Via Sant’Abbondio 12), focusing on topics at the intersection of sociology, political theory and history.
The lectures, intended for PhD students and undergraduates but open to the interested public, are organised and moderated by Professor Francesco Di Iorio of the Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Territory. The initiative offers an opportunity to engage with internationally renowned scholars on the mechanisms governing social movements and political transition, from a comparative and interdisciplinary perspective.
The first lecture (14.30–16.00), entitled ‘Explaining Social Movements: Mechanisms of Mobilisation and Change’, will be given by Professor Daniel Little, a distinguished philosopher and sociologist, former president of the University of Michigan–Dearborn and professor emeritus at the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor. The lecture will focus on the formation and spread of far-right movements in contemporary Western democracies.
The second lecture (16.15–17.45), entitled ‘On the State Formation in Thailand’, will be given by Professor Chaiyan Rajchagool, a historian and sociologist, former professor at Chiang Mai University, and one of the leading experts on the history and culture of modern Thailand. The lecture will examine the process of the formation of the modern Thai state from the late 19th century onwards and analyse the differences and similarities between this process and the history of Italian unification.
