The Neuroscience Research Centre of the University of Insubria, in collaboration with the University’s Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences and Department of Medicine and Technological Innovation, and with the patronage of the Municipality of Busto Arsizio, is organising the international workshop “The Enteric Nervous System in Health and Disease”, dedicated to the study of the enteric nervous system.

The event will take place on Friday 29 May, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the Conference Room of the Textile Museum in Busto Arsizio, at 6 Via Alessandro Volta.

The workshop will focus on the latest scientific evidence concerning the neurophysiological mechanisms regulating the complex neuronal network that innervates the gastrointestinal tract, in both health and disease. The event will feature internationally renowned experts, with plenary lectures, a poster session and two short talk sessions dedicated to young researchers selected from among the participants who submitted an abstract.

The programme includes, in the morning session, presentations by Pieter Vanden Berghe of the Leuven Brain Institute, with a lecture on the complexity of the enteric nervous system as observed through microscopy, and Werend Boesmans of Maastricht University, focusing on the role of enteric glia in the homeostasis of the enteric nervous system in health and disease. These will be followed by short talks by Fabiana Miraglia of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa and Giorgia Valetti of the University of Insubria.

The afternoon session will open with short talks by Annalisa Bosi of the University of Insubria and Francesca Terrin of the University of Padua. These will be followed by plenary lectures by Cristina Giaroni of the University of Insubria, dedicated to the enteric nervous system at the crossroads of the microbiota–gut–brain axis, and Cecilia Giron of the University of Padua, on communication between the gut microbiota and neurons. The plenary sessions will be chaired by Cristina Giaroni and Werend Boesmans.

The event is aimed at university students, PhD candidates, postdoctoral researchers and senior researchers in the biomedical field. The workshop represents an important opportunity for international training and networking, aimed at promoting scientific updates, strengthening collaborations and encouraging new research perspectives in the field of enteric neuroscience.
