The inauguration of Professor Giorgio Maria Zamperetti, Professor of Commercial Law at the University of Insubria, as Honorary Consul of Belgium with jurisdiction over Lombardy took place in Milan on 29 April. The event was attended by representatives from the institutions, the academic world and the business community.

The ceremony opened with a tribute to the Insubria region, featuring the performance of the national anthems by a wind and percussion ensemble comprising twenty students from the ‘Giuseppe Verdi’ Conservatory of Como, conducted by Maestro Fulvio Clementi.

The President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana, opened the proceedings, recalling Professor Zamperetti’s long-standing commitment to promoting the internationalisation of the Lombardy university system. The Dean of the Consular Corps of Milan and Lombardy, Veronica Crego Porley, and the Lombardy Region’s Undersecretary for International and European Relations, Raffaele Cattaneo, then took the floor, emphasising the importance of the Consulate’s opening as a means of strengthening institutional relations and enhancing the region’s international profile.

The University of Insubria was represented by a delegation from the University, demonstrating its support for Professor Zamperetti and its recognition of an appointment that also enhances the University’s international standing. Present at the ceremony were the Rector, Maria Pierro, the Head of the Department of Law, Economics and Culture, Giuseppe Colangelo; the Head of the Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences, Flavia Marinelli; the Head of the Department of Humanities and Innovation for the Territory, Paola Biavaschi, accompanied by Professor Francesca Pulitanò; the Head of the Teaching and Learning Centre, Francesca Ferrari; and the Head of the Internationalisation Service, Luca Gallo.

In his inaugural address, Professor Zamperetti emphasised: ‘The Consulate serves as a platform for dialogue between institutions, universities and the business sector, helping to develop new opportunities for collaboration – including academic collaboration – between Belgium and Lombardy, in a region that represents a key hub for European relations and for the development of new synergies between the two countries.’

With this in mind, the University of Insubria will be able to strengthen and develop partnerships with Belgian universities and institutions, including in the fields of innovation and emerging technologies, offering new opportunities to students and researchers in an international context shaped by digital transformation.
