From 14 to 19 June, Villa Toeplitz will once again host the Oxford Residence Week for Entrepreneurship Scholars, a prestigious international event dedicated to research on entrepreneurship and innovation. Varese’s confirmation as the host city represents an important recognition for the local area, for the University of Insubria and for the Department of Economics, which in 2025 successfully welcomed, again at Villa Toeplitz, the first and only edition organised outside the United Kingdom. That experience laid the foundations for the initiative’s return in 2026.
For more than a decade, the Oxford Residence Week for Entrepreneurship Scholars has been a point of reference for scholars working in the fields of entrepreneurship and innovation. Established at Green Templeton College, University of Oxford, this original format promotes dialogue among researchers from different backgrounds. Through informal and interdisciplinary exchange on emerging topics that develop over the course of the week, new ideas, scientific collaborations and reflections take shape, contributing to the definition of policies and strategies for innovation.
“The decision to return to Varese testifies to the quality of last year’s experience and to the ability of the local area to offer an ideal setting for research and dialogue,” says Professor Alessia Pisoni of the Department of Economics at the University of Insubria, scientific coordinator of the event together with Professor Saul Estrin of the London School of Economics, Professor Janet Bercovitz of the University of Colorado Boulder and Professor Maryann Feldman of Arizona State University.
“Having the honour of hosting the event again in Varese is a source of great satisfaction and represents recognition of the scientific and organisational value expressed by our Department and by the Varese area,” adds Professor Andrea Uselli, Director of the Department of Economics.
Surrounded by greenery and characterised by an environment conducive to reflection and the exchange of ideas, Villa Toeplitz will once again provide the ideal setting for the week’s activities. The programme includes individual work sessions alternating with collective sessions dedicated to the presentation and discussion of research projects under development, encouraging open and constructive dialogue among scholars from different disciplines and backgrounds.
The official opening is scheduled for Sunday 14 June, with a welcome event at the Palace Grand Hotel in Varese involving institutions, sponsoring bodies and representatives from the academic and business communities. Participation in the scientific activities will be reserved for a selected group of scholars from Europe, North America and other countries, together with young researchers who will have the opportunity to engage with some of the leading figures in international research.
“The confirmation of the Oxford Residence Week for Entrepreneurship Scholars in Varese is a result of extraordinary importance for our University. The presence of scholars from some of the most prestigious international universities will help further strengthen the University of Insubria’s collaboration networks and international visibility,” comments Rector Maria Pierro. “The event contributes to consolidating the University’s international positioning and to enhancing the local area as a place capable of attracting scientific initiatives of the highest level.”
The event is made possible thanks to the support of Fondazione Avvocato Giovanni Valcavi per l’Università degli Studi dell’Insubria, Openjobmetis, Intesa Sanpaolo, the Order of Chartered Accountants and Accounting Experts of Varese, and Elmec Informatica, which have chosen to support an academic initiative capable of enhancing the local area and promoting dialogue among research, innovation and enterprise.
The initiative also enjoys the patronage of Regione Lombardia, the Province of Varese, the Municipality of Varese, the Varese Chamber of Commerce, Museo Castiglioni and Fondazione Morandini, bearing witness to the synergy among institutions, academia and local economic actors in promoting opportunities for exchange and growth with an international outlook.
