The 14th edition of the ‘Accounting, Society and the Environment (ASE) Research Workshop’ took place on Friday 15 May at the Sant’Abbondio campus of the University of Insubria in Como. This international event brought together academics to discuss issues relating to sustainability, reporting, and contemporary social, environmental and ethical transformations.
The initiative, organised by Patrizia Gazzola and Stefano Amelio, lecturers from the Department of Economics, brought together international scholars to discuss the theme “Accounting for a Changing World: Critical Reflections on Purpose, People, and the Planet”. The debate centred on the role of accounting in a context marked by geopolitical instability, the climate crisis, social inequalities and rapid technological change.
During the workshop, topics related to accountability, transparency and sustainability were addressed, with particular attention to the contribution that accounting practices can make towards building fairer and more conscious development models. The discussion also extended to critical aspects of the discipline, questioning how accounting can sometimes contribute to the perpetuation of social inequalities and environmental degradation.
During the event, the Best Paper Prize was awarded to the paper ‘Environmental Management Practices (EMPs) in the Hospitality Sector: Disclosure and Effects on Financial and Non-Financial Performance’, authored by Alessandro Panno, Simone Copes and Roberta Minazzi, lecturers in the Department of Law, Economics and Culture.
The meeting was also attended by the organisers and the Director of the Department of Economics, Andrea Uselli. The event confirmed the significance of the “ASE Research Workshop” within the international academic landscape and the role of the University of Insubria as a venue for open and interdisciplinary scientific dialogue.
