The University of Insubria will award an honorary master’s degree in Communication Sciences and Techniques to Gerry Scotti. The ceremony will take place on Monday 15 June at 5 pm in the Great Hall of the Rectorate, at Via Ravasi 2 in Varese.
Gerry Scotti, born Virginio in the province of Pavia in 1956, has enjoyed a career spanning over forty years in radio and television. He is one of the presenters most loved by the public, thanks to highly successful programmes and a direct, empathetic communication style capable of speaking to different generations. His experience represents a significant example of the evolution of contemporary communication and the relationship between media, language and society.
The proposal for the award originated within DISUIT, the Department of Human Sciences and Innovation for the Territory, which wished to recognise Gerry Scotti’s contribution to the world of communication, television and the Italian vernacular. The resolution, following the usual procedure, was approved by the Academic Senate and by the Minister for Universities and Research, Anna Maria Bernini, who will be present at the event.
The ceremony will include institutional greetings from Rector Maria Pierro, the reading of the conferment resolution by Disuit Director Paola Biavaschi, the laudatory address delivered by Giulio Facchetti, Full Professor of Glottology and Linguistics, followed by Gerry Scotti’s keynote lecture and the proclamation and conferment of the honorary degree.
The proposal for the award, signed by Professor Giulio Facchetti, states: ‘Gerry Scotti has successfully combined tradition and innovation, popular culture and complex media languages, professionalism and spontaneity, establishing himself as a leading figure capable of conveying knowledge, entertainment and cultural values through the medium of television. The defining feature of his persona is his ability to establish a bond of trust with millions of viewers, based on empathy and a communicative style that eschews bombast and artifice in favour of authenticity, clarity and respect. These qualities, combined with a professional rigour that has been consolidated over a career of rare longevity and continuity, make Gerry Scotti a leading figure in the history of Italian television and an exemplary model of democratic communication'.
Biography of Gerry Scotti
Virginio Scotti, known professionally as Gerry Scotti, was born on 7 August 1956 in Camporinaldo, a hamlet of Miradolo Terme, in the province of Pavia. Born in Pavia but Milanese by adoption, he moved to Milan with his family in the 1960s. After completing his classical studies at the Carducci High School, he enrolled in the Faculty of Law at the University of Milan. During the same period, he began his career in radio, among the pioneers of Italian private broadcasters: from Radio Hinterland Milano 2 he moved to Radio Milano International, distinguishing himself for his musical expertise and entertainment skills. At the same time, he worked as a copywriter for the advertising agency McCann-Erickson.
In 1982, he joined the newly established Radio Deejay at the invitation of Claudio Cecchetto, becoming the station’s first presenter. The following year, he made his television debut with ‘Deejay Television’, the first Italian programme dedicated to music videos. Since then, he has presented over a hundred programmes for the Mediaset networks, many of which have become icons of Italian television, including ‘Festivalbar’, ‘Il gioco dei 9’, ‘Passaparola’, ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’, ‘La Corrida’, ‘Paperissima’, ‘Io canto’, ‘Lo show dei record’ and ‘La ruota della fortuna’. He has also worked as an actor in TV dramas and films and has been the face of major national brands.
From 1987 to 1992, he served as a member of parliament, elected as an independent on the Socialist Party’s lists. Alongside his television work, he is involved in wine production with the Fratelli Giorgi winery in Canneto Pavese. Father to Edoardo and grandfather to Virginia, Pietro and Olivia, he is one of the most popular and recognisable figures on Italian television.
