The University of Insubria is strengthening the presence of students, teaching activities and academic life in the city centre. The University and the Varese Chamber of Commerce today signed the framework agreement that grants the University part of the Chamber of Commerce building in Piazza Monte Grappa for ten years

The document, already approved by the respective governing bodies, was signed at the Rectorate by Rector Maria Pierro and the President of the Varese Chamber of Commerce, Mauro Vitiello, in the presence of Deputy Rector Umberto Piarulli, Professor Giuseppe Colangelo – Director of the Department of Law, Economics and Cultures –, the University’s Director General Antonio Romeo and the Secretary General of the Chamber of Commerce, Anna Deligios.

The Chamber of Commerce will carry out work to adapt the building so that two classrooms with 90/100 seats each can be made available, together with common areas for students – study rooms and refreshment areas –, offices for teaching staff and a secretary’s office. Pending completion of this work, a temporary concession is planned for part of the building already considered suitable for university use, including the prestigious Sala Campiotti.  Teaching activities will begin as early as next September, with the start of the new 2026-2027 academic year.

Insubria, following a model already adopted by several universities, which involves locating law, economics and humanities teaching activities in urban centres, will move to Piazza Monte Grappa the single-cycle Master’s degree programme in Law currently delivered at the Bizzozero Campus. The Law programme is growing and now has around 350 students overall, with more than 130 first-year students.

The agreement between the University of Insubria and the Chamber of Commerce goes beyond logistical aspects and provides for wide-ranging collaboration on several fronts: integration between the University and business, with the promotion of curricular and extracurricular internships; innovation and territorial development, through shared research projects in the legal and economic fields and joint initiatives; urban regeneration and attractiveness, with events, cultural and scientific activities in the city centre, student guidance and collaborations with local institutions.

“This agreement represents an important step in bringing the University ever closer to the city and its citizens,” commented Rector Maria Pierro. “Bringing Law into the centre of Varese means creating a vibrant place for education, dialogue and growth, capable of interacting directly with institutions and the economic system. It is a choice that strengthens the link between the University and the local area and helps make the city centre an increasingly dynamic space open to the community.”

“The future of our local area inevitably depends on the ability to invest in the younger generations and in the quality of human capital,” stressed the President of the Varese Chamber of Commerce, Mauro Vitiello. “We are working with determination to ensure that Piazza Monte Grappa becomes a focal point for this change, a place where education of excellence meets the heart of the city. We firmly believe that the University can be a key element in enhancing the local area, capable of triggering direct dialogue between research and businesses. This project represents an urban regeneration challenge for Varese, aimed at creating an efficient ecosystem that stimulates new economic and social opportunities.”

“This project strengthens the link between education and the local area,” highlighted Deputy Rector of the University of Insubria Umberto Piarulli . “The physical proximity between the university, institutions and the production system will foster new opportunities for students, starting with internships and collaborations.”

For Giuseppe Colangelo, Director of the Department of Law, Economics and Cultures to which the Law programme belongs: “A new city-centre location for Law in Varese will further encourage students to attend lectures, thanks also to suitable spaces: Sala Campiotti will be particularly important for first-year students.”

“It should also be considered a new service for students,” concluded Insubria’s Director General Antonio Romeo, “who will have the opportunity to experience both their education and the city at the same time, with mobility services close at hand.”

“Bringing university students into our headquarters means revitalising the city centre, giving them the opportunity to use central meeting places while benefiting from a diversified food offer and local businesses,” highlighted the Secretary General of the Varese Chamber of Commerce, Anna Deligios. “In this way, Varese becomes more attractive, increasingly youth-friendly and able to retain its talents.”
