The mission of the University of Insubria in the Republic of Ecuador took place from 2 to 9 October. The initiative was sponsored by the Consul General of Ecuador in Milan Juan Carlos Castrillón, who had appreciated the potential of the University on the occasion of the International Relations Day, which took place in the Cloister of Sant'Abbondio on 10 May. The Consul, with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Human Mobility, has organized a series of meetings with the main universities in the country, interested in developing cooperation relations with Insubria.
The delegate of the rector for internationalization, professor Giorgio Maria Zamperetti, accompanied by a ministry official, met with the academic authorities of Universidad Internacional del Ecuador, Universidad Central del Ecuador, Universidad de Otavalo, Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and Hemispherios University. In some cases, memoranda of understanding for academic cooperation have been signed directly, while in others the foundations for the development of the report have been successfully laid.
The rector’s delegate also had a meeting with the Italian ambassador in Quito, Giovanni Davoli, who, while expressing his willingness to cooperate in the development of inter-academic relations, He also illustrated the country’s potential by pointing out that in Italy there is a large Ecuadorian community (around 85,000 people), which represents a consolidated bridge for all initiatives between the two countries.
Among the many aspects interesting for academic collaborations, the territory of Ecuador presents an extraordinary biodiversity, in particular in the regions of the Amazon and the archipelago of the Galápagos, where the universities visited have important research centers, open to researchers from consortia universities; the conclusion of agreements will offer interesting opportunities for collaboration "on the field" to the many Insubria professors working in biological, naturalistic and climate change disciplines.
For the lawyers will be of particular interest the agreement with the University of Otavalo, in which is particularly active the study of minority rights (recognized by the Ecuadorian Constitution) and the law of migration, "hot" topics Also in Insubria, where the Research Centre on Minorities - Cerm.
In the medical field, Ecuador faces specific health challenges related to tropical diseases, public health and rural healthcare. Cooperation in this area could provide the students of Medicine and Nursing of Insubria with the opportunity to confront different health contexts and develop applied research projects, improving the quality of training.
The tourist vocation of Ecuador and the need to train managers in this sector are finally a point of interest for the degree courses of Tourism Sciences offered at University and in particular for the master’s degree in English Hospitality for sustainable tourism development, It will attract many Ecuadorian students.
