The Department of Biotechnology and Life Sciences (DBSV), through its Internship Desk, promotes curricular internships (Internships), which provide students with opportunities to carry out practical activities, including outside the University, particularly at qualified public or private organisations.
Please note that for email communications with the internship office, students must use only the university email address provided at the time of enrolment. Responses to messages sent from private email accounts cannot be guaranteed.
Every student who intends to activate their curricular (internal) internship must:
- Fill in the Internship Start Request Form - Thesis Entry (see attachment below, in the section for your degree programme) in collaboration with your university tutor, taking care to include, in a comprehensive manner, the proposed training objective and the start and end dates of the internship period.
- Submit the above document to the Degree Course Internship Committee for the final activation of the internship.
- Internal interns: If travel to facilities outside the university is planned during the internship, in order to ensure that the intern has normal insurance coverage during such travel, the tutor must send an official authorisation to the contact person at the external facility and cc the internship office (stagedbsv@uninsubria.it) and the relevant Internship Committee.
No attendance register needs to be completed.
Once the internship has been completed, the student must do the following to record that it has been carried out:
- Register for the exam for the course entitled TRAINING INTERNSHIP/CURRICULAR TRAINEESHIP on the ESSE3 notice board. (NOT for BIOSOS students)
Fill in the internship completion form - final report with your university tutor (see attachment below, in the section for your degree course) and send it by email to the Internship Committee of your degree programme before the date of the appeal of the TRAINING/CURRICULAR TRAINEESHIP you are enrolled in.

As part of the Master's Degree programme in Biotechnology for the Bio-Based and Health Industry, the internship involves experimental work and is worth 30 CFU, corresponding to a minimum of 750 hours. The internship period for the preparation of the degree thesis must in any case be qualitatively and quantitatively adequate to achieve the objectives of an internship for a master's degree in biotechnology. As a guideline, a minimum period of 9 months can be considered suitable, considering a weekly attendance of 30-40 hours. It is, however, the responsibility of the university tutor, together with the external tutor, when present, to assess whether the work carried out by the intern is adequate for the writing of the degree thesis. Students participating in the Double Degree programme (enrolled at the University of Insubria or the University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, UTC) carry out their internal curricular internship at the university where they completed their second year and discuss their thesis at the university where they are enrolled. In order to access internships, students are required to have passed all first-year exams.
- For internal internships, fill in the Request Form and send it to the internship committee. (see email below).
- If you choose to do your internship at facilities outside the university, this must be authorised in advance by the Course Council after consulting the Internship and Work Experience Committee. Students must contact the DBSV Internship Desk. Approval is subject to the scientific relevance and biotechnological nature of the proposed project. The student is assigned a supervisor (a lecturer from the Department, preferably from the Course Council).

The Master's Degree course in Biology and Sustainability includes an internship for the preparation of the degree thesis and the final examination, which together are worth 27 CFU credits, corresponding to at least 675 hours. The internship is an experimental activity carried out by the intern for an indicative period of at least 8 months, which may be non-consecutive, with a weekly commitment of approximately 30 hours in the laboratory and/or field. In any case, the internship period must be qualitatively and quantitatively adequate to achieve the objectives necessary for the preparation of a master's thesis focused on environmental sustainability in the biological field, and it is the responsibility of the university tutor, together with the external tutor when applicable, to assess the adequacy of the experimental activity conducted by the intern for the purposes of writing the thesis.
Internal internships are carried out under the supervision of a university tutor (a lecturer from the degree course or the university) and are normally based at the university's facilities. To access an internal internship, you must complete the Internship Application Form and send it to the Internship and Work Experience Committee (see below).
External internships are carried out at facilities outside the University, provided they are affiliated, under the supervision of an external tutor, who is the contact person for the facility where the internship takes place. The scientific project of the internship must be authorised in advance by the Degree Course Council, after consulting the Internship and Work Experience Committee. A positive opinion is subject to the relevance of the proposed project to environmental sustainability in the field of biology. In addition to the external tutor, the intern is assigned a university tutor (a lecturer from the degree programme, preferably affiliated with the DBSV or DiSTA).
To access the external internship, you must contact the DBSV Internship Desk and fill in the Internship Application Form together with the external tutor and send it to the Internship and Work Experience Committee (see below), which will assess its suitability for a master's degree thesis on environmental sustainability in biology. If the assessment is positive, the DBSV Internship Desk will activate the internship.
At the end of the internship, you must fill in the End of Internship Form and send it to the Internship and Work Experience Committee (see below).
For further information, please consult the DBSV Internship Desk page or contact the Internship and Work Experience Committee.
