Have an interest in understanding other cultures and some mental agility in order to break the “schemas” of the legal positivism and of the State centrality.

Ability to understand the specificity of Islam, a religious tradition which is important for the history, culture and present situation of Europe.
Ability to orient oneself within different cultural codes and to read the religious Islamic law in the light of its theological presuppositions.
A knowledge of the basic structures of Islam and Islamic law, in the light of its historical tradition and changes, both in the territories of its origin and in Europe (so called “European Islam”).

-Origins of Islam and its expansion
-The shar’ia (Quran, Sunnah, consensus and analogic reasoning)
-The methodologies for the interpretation
-The Ottoman Empire: a model of Islamic State
-The decline and consequences of European colonization
-The decolonization and the “laic regimes”
-The struggle for the interpretation: between fundamentalism and reforms
-The Islam of Tahir Square and “Arab spring”
-The Islam in Europe: characters and problems
-The Islam in Italy: characters and problems
-Some practical issues: family and women in Islam; mosques and imams; Islamic bioethics
