METHODS AND ETHICS OF RESEARCH
Teaching aims and foreseen results.
The course goal is training for the ethical reasoning in biomedical contexts of research and work. The skills that have to be pursued and implemented are the following ones: perceiving a moral dilemma, justifying personal evaluations, in the light of rules, principles and theories, composing a disagreement inside the staff, recognizing historical and cultural dimensions of scientific and technological practices, learning a language suitable for understanding, interpreting and commenting (in dialogue) the narrative events of the institutional life.
A final oral individual conversation with the teacher shows the level of competence in discerning the moral issues, understanding the ethical language, reconstructing a theoretical framework, partecipating in a pluralistic dialogue, and reasoning about important dilemmas,
Definition of bioethics (history, aims, methods, tools), biological science and research, humanities, application. Truth telling. Privacy and confidentiality. Euthanasia and overtreatment. Drug experimentation, codes of ethics and ethics committees. Informed consent. Abortion and status of embryo. Assisted procreation. Cloning and stem cells. Justice and resources allocation. Organ transplantation. Definition of death and brain death. Islamic and Jewish patients. Communication in the equipe. Ethics, literature and cinema. Vaccines and public health issues. Burn out in biological personnel. Ethics and psychiatry, psychoanalysis and psychotherapy. Genetic testing and screening. Nursing and ethics at the chairside. Ethics consultation. Animal rights.
Vis a vis lessons will deal with some of these topics and will show the learning methodology. Individual ways of ethical investigation are to be taught in the classroom
