To give a physical explanation of the dynamics of a laser and be able to reproduce them by numerical integration of the equations.

The black body. The quantum theory of radiation. Coefficients A and B of Einstein. Rate equations for the laser. Optical pumping. The laser as a damped anharmonic oscillator: linear and nonlinear free oscillations, linear and nonlinear forced oscillations, bistability and transition to chaos, active Q-switching. Laser with saturable absorber: bistability, passive Q-switching, excitability.
To each topic corresponds first lectures and then computer simulations.

The specific teaching materials will be made available to students on the e-learning platform.
Oral examination based on the analytical and numerical study of a specific topic.
