Teaching objectives and expected learning outcomes:

To provide fundamental notions on oscillatory phenomena and waves.

Course program:

OSCILLATIONS Free, damped, forced harmonic oscillations. Coupled oscillators. Parametric oscillations. Anharmonic oscillations. Inverted pendulum.
WAVES D’Alembert’s equation, plane waves and spherical waves. Beating of waves with different frequencies. Group velocity. Dispersion. Sound waves. Electromagnetic waves in a dielectric. Water waves. Coherence. Interference. Young: Michelson, Mach-Zehnder. Diffraction: Kirchoff’s integral, single slit, double slit, grating, circular aperture, opaque disc.
