Prerequisites: High School mathematics and first year calculus. Elements of differential and integral calculus are essential.

Teaching objectives and expected learning outcomes: Fundamentals of probability and elements of descriptive statistics. Basics about curve fitting, parameter estimate and hypothesis testing. Students are expected to develop a problem solving attitude and to be able to perform a basic experimental data analysis, computer assisted.

* Combinatorial calculus & Elements of probability * Frequentist definition of probability; alternatives * Conditional probability, correlation * Distributions, permutations and all that * Bayes’ theorem * Probability distribution function * Moment generating function * Descriptive statistics * Mean, median, moda * Variance and standard deviation * Weighted mean * Error propagation * Bernoulli, geometrical & hypergeometrical, Poisson, and Gaussian probability distribution functions * Central limit theorem * Parameter estimate, optimal fit * Maximum likelihood * Chi squared mimimization.

Verification of learning skills: Written and oral examination. The written exam is essentially based on problem solving. The oral examination will be based on the discussion about a stet-of-the-art subject agreed with the student.
