The course aims to provide the students with:
- -The knowledge in terminology, methods and instruments in the fields of hygiene, epidemiology and public health
- -The capacity to develop a scientific methodological approach, using the learned concepts, to participate in planning and doing prevention programs
- the criteria of cause-effect in medicine
- the principal types of epidemiological studies and their validity
- The epidemiological measures and principles of statistical analysis related to the measures.

1. General concepts of public health, hygiene and epidemiology: the concept of health; current epidemiological scenario and classification of diseases; concept of risk; indicators, exposure-effect, cause, health and disease determinants; primary, secondary and tertiary prevention
2. Epidemiology and prevention of infectious diseases: risk factors; host-parasite relations, sources and reservoirs of infection, pathways of penetration and release of pathogens, mode of transmission; disinfection and sterilization
3. Hospital hygiene: infections in health facilities; management of antibiotic therapy; medical waste management
4. Epidemiology and prevention of chronic diseases: cardiovascular diseases and periodontal diseases.
5. Health education: planning of an intervention; methodology
6. Health planning and organization: quality and risk management, errors in healthcare,
7. Epidemiological methodology: The main epidemiological studies: Frequency measurements and association measures. Bias and confoundings. Control methods for confounding.
8. Concepts of nutritional epidemiology: food questionnaires, the EPIC and Moli-sani study
9. Use of bibliographic databases
