INSTITUTIONS AND SECOND LANGUAGES IN ITALY: A HISTORIOGRAPHICAL APPROACH
The conference aims to follow up on research topics that have already been studied at CIRSIL. These regard foreign language teaching in Italian universities from Italian unification to 1980, when Law 382 concerning university teaching reorganisation was issued. As compared to the previous CIRSIL conference in Milan, Italy (2017), paper proposals will be opened to research on (public, private and religious) educational establishments, cultural or economic organisations, cultural societies and other Italian associations, also in the years preceding the aforementioned historical period.
Suggested research areas are: a) analysis of lexicographic and grammaticographic didactic materials targeted at the members of academic and educational institutions, cultural organisations and societies, etc.; b) study of the nature of academic faculties, socio-cultural or other forms of societies and organisations, including number, type and background of their teachers and students; c) relationship between foreign languages and other related subjects, such as philology and literature, up to the establishment of teaching posts or specific courses in the various abovementioned institutions or organisations.
Proposals may either refer to the particular situation of single Italian realities or to general considerations about the academic world and the sociocultural societies and organisations described in this call for papers.
Proposals should have a historiographical perspective and can deal with any language in terms of:
- Language teaching and learning materials
- Grammars, manuals, methodologies
- Dictionaries, vocabularies and glossaries
- Methodological and glottodidactic approaches
- Other materials
- The organisation of educational or academic institutions, associations and societies, etc.
- Teachers’ education and curricula
- Students’ curricula
- Institutional and statutory documents
- Development of language teaching within institutions
- Among philology, literature and history of the language
- Languages in scientific curricula
- Languages in humanistic curricula (Political Sciences, Economics, Literature, Education, etc.)
- Languages in private or public institutions, be they religious or lay, and in sociocultural and economic organisations
The call for papers also provides for an open session on second language teaching, in relation to the research interests of CIRSIL, always from a historiographical point of view (up to 1980).

15 December 2018:
Proposal submission deadline. Proposals should be sent to the CIRSIL email address firstname.lastname@example.org. They can be submitted in Italian, French, English, Spanish and German. They should include a title and an abstract of max 500 words (bibliography excluded). In case of publication the committee will decide whether to include other languages as well.
5 January 2019:
Notification of acceptance (the evaluation outcome will be communicated via email).
22 – 23 March 2019:
An online registration is required to participate. The link will be active from January 2019.
No registration fee is required; however, for practical reasons, it is necessary to register by 15 February 2019.
A social dinner will be organised on 22 March: costs and registration deadlines will be communicated as soon as possible.
