The Department has an active research program fostered by its multi-disciplinary nature and its academic location within the University-Hospital (Ospedale di Circolo e Fondazione Macchi) in Varese. Professor Andrea Sala is the head of the Department.
There are currently eight divisions working in collaboration on different research programs:
Division of General Surgery Unit: hepatic, colo-rectal and laparoscopic surgery.
Division of Vascular Surgery Unit: vascular endoprostheses research.
Division of Thoracic Surgery Unit: genetic epidemiology of lung cancer and smoking.
Division of Cardiac Surgery Unit: heart failure, arrhythmia surgery, video assisted mitral surgery, leucocyte filters, myocardial microdyalisis, beating heart surgery.
Division of Plastic Surgery Unit: role of VEGF in cutaneous growth process.
Division of Otorynolaryngoiatric Unit: endonasal endoscopy in antherior skull base pathology.
Division of Neurosurgery Unit: neoangiogenesis in implanted human GBM.
Division of Ophtalmology Unit: imaging techniques in retinal disease.
Departmental research is essentially driven by the clinical needs of patients. Research programs are focused both on translating scientific findings into clinical practice and on finding scientific solutions to clinical problems.
