Biography |
Born in Milan on March
30, 1946. M.D. degree (1971), board certified in Neurosurgery (1975)
and in Neurology (1977) at the University of Milan. Clinical Assistant
(1972-1986), Clinical Consultant (1986-1998), Head of the Neurosurgical
Emergency Unit (1999- Sept 30th, 2001) of the Neurosurgical Department
of Milan University. Certified “ contratto” Professor
of Neurosurgery at the University of Milan from 1985. Fellow in Neurosurgery
(Oct 30th, 1984- Sept 30th, 1985) at the University of Pennsylvania,
Philadelphia (USA). Coordinator of the Italian Study Group on Head
Injury from 1994 to 1997. On Oct 31, 2000 qualified at the comparative
evaluation for the position of Professor of Neurosurgery at the University
of Sassari. From Oct 1, 2001 full Professor of Neurosurgery at the
University of Insubria, Varese. From Oct 15th, 2001 Head of the Neurosurgical
Dept Ospedale di Circolo-Fondazione Macchi, Varese. From November 2002
member of the Steering Committee of the Italian Society of Neurosurgery.
From March 2004 Director of the Neurosurgical School of Specialty
of the University of Insubria. From September 2004 Chief of the Department
of Head and Neck Science of the Ospedale di Circolo e Fondazione Macchi
in Varese. From November 2005 member of the Steering Committee of
the Italian Association of Neuroncology. |

Research interests |
Giustino Tomei and his
group is involved in the following branches of interest:
1) Experimental model of traumatic brain injury: morphological studies
by Corrosion Casting, Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron
Microscopy and Light Microscopy of Blood Brain Barrier Damage.
2)Antiangiogenic experimental therapies (PF-4/CTF; PF4-DLR) studied
on malignant glioma (U-87) in nude mice
(In collaboration with the Neurosurgical Dpt. University of Milan)
3) The effect of Baclofen on primary cultures of cortical neurons.
4) Pulsed radiofrequency (PRF) in the treatment of chronic neuropathic
pain: evaluation of c-fos expression in an experimental model of chronic
constriction injury (CCI). |

Clinical interests |
The main topics of interest
are head injury, brain tumors and subarachnoid hemorrhage.
Since 1996, as coordinator of the Italian Study Group on Head Injury,
Giustino Tomei has been involved in the Italian Guide Lines of Head
injuries treatment.
From 2001 he has been involved in the following study groups:
1) Lombardia group of neuroncology
2) Italian group of neuroncology
3) Italian group on the study of Subarachnoid hemorrhage
