Biography

Born in Milan, Italy, September 11, 1940. Professor Dionigi is married to Janet Hesselbrock. Three children: Adriana, Gianlorenzo and Marta.

EDUCATION: Liceo Classico G. Carducci 1955-1959, University of Pavia, Medical School 1959-1965, University of Pavia, Dept. of Surgery (Prof. Donati) 1965-1968. University of Cincinnati, Dept. of Surgery (Dr. W. Altemeier and Dr J.W. Alexander) 1969-1970 and 1976.

He is Professor of General Surgery, Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Professor Dionigi served as Dean of the Medical School for a number of years, and is presently Rector of the University. The Italian Government nominated him as a representative of the Surgical Community in the National Committee of Bioethics and in the National Health Committee (2002-). Professor Dionigi’s publications are both voluminous (more than 800) and highly rated. Nearly every aspect of general surgery and minimally invasive surgery is covered by one of his articles, monographs, edited books, or book chapters. He has performed more than 18,000 surgical procedures, mainly Pancreatic and Hepatobiliary Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery, and Oncological Surgery.

His avocations are: music (classical and jazz), history (having authored seven books on historical topics), tennis, and fly-fishing.
