Biography

Prof. Giulio Carcano was born in Varese on April 15, 1958
 

Qualifications and awards

Liceo Classico "E. Cairoli" in Varese: high school degree on 1976-77

Degree in Medicine at University of Pavia on 1982-83 with a final evaluation of 110/100 cum laude.

From 1980 to 1983 Prof. Carcano worked as internal student in the Division of General Surgery, Hospital of Circolo-Varese as a staff physician from 1983 to 1985. In 1985-86 he worked in the Division of Neurology- Hospital of Circolo-Varese as staff physician.
In the period between 1987 and 1989 he attended the Department of Surgical Pathology III, University of Pavia, Faculty of Medicine in Varese.

Specialty on General Surgery at University of Pavia on 1987-88, title of specialization thesis “Evaluation of gravity of acute pancreatitis with surgical implications” with a final evaluation of 50/50.

Specialty on Vascular Surgery at University of Milano on 1992-93, title of specialization thesis “Aneurisms of visceral arteries”, with a final evaluation of 70/70.

Since August 2001 Prof. Carcano has been a Full Professor of General Surgery. 

In his carreer Prof. Carcano attended several congresses and symposia, in many of them as a speaker and lecturer; he also collected some awards, including, in 1989 - Italian Sociey of Surgery: “Radio-immuno-guided surgery, operation for two sincronous tumors of colon with liver metastases in 1994” - Italian Sociey of Surgery: “Repeated hepatectomies for recurrent liver metastases from colo-rectal cancer”

He attended to more than 3,600 surgical operations in elective surgery and in emergency, about gastro-intestinal tract, thoracic surgery, laparoscopic surgery and endocrine gland surgery. He performed as first surgeon about 1,200 surgical operations.
 

Research interests

Prof. Carcano is involved as a Full Professor in several clinic research studies on surgical techniques, new technologies and surgical pathology. He also attends research activity in the Department of General Surgery I- Directed by Prof. Renzo Dionigi.

These are some of his principal sites of interest:

- Use of mechanical staplers in pancreatic surgery
- New technologies in hepatic surgery
- Phisiopathology of atherosclerotic lesions
- New technologies in laparoscopic surgery
- Neoplastic markers of pancreatic tumors
- Loco-regional and metastatic diffusion of colon carcinoma in relationship with the localization of the tumor itself
- Liver regeneration after hepatectomy using different techniques of vascular ilar clamp: role of O2 free-radicals
- New technologies in thyroid surgery
 

Teaching experience and appointments

Prof. Carcano teachs many different courses in the School of Medicine at the University of Insubria; he is clinical lecturer in general surgery, thoracic surgery, geriatric surgey and emergency surgery. He also gives lectures to nurses, obstetrics and physiotherapists.

He is a guide for medical students for preparation of degree thesis, and for residents of general and thoracic surgery specialization school for specialization thesis

Prof. Carcano did his didactic activity, from 1990 up to now, c/o School of Medicine at the University of Insubria.
