Qualifications and awards

1997 Scientific Coordinator of the project financed by MIUR: Application of the functional habitat criteria in the management of freshwater ecosystems.

2001 Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit of the University of Insubria on the Life-Natura 2001 project: “Genetic heterogeneity of A. Pallipes populations to be used in restocking plans”.

2002/05 Scientific Coordinator of the Research Unit in the EU project on the “Development of integrated water management tools for the Tuyamuyn reservoir complex for the improvement of public health in the disaster zone of the lower Amu-Darya – Central Asia”.

Research interests

The main body of his research is devoted to the study of the ecology of running waters with reference to hydraulic habitats and invertebrate community structure analysis. On these topics he has developed understanding of stream habitats and their ecological and hydrological definition using his knowledge of geomorphology and its integration with ecology. The application of multivariate analysis techniques to observational field data has facilitated the sttudy and the definition of invertebrate habitats. He has integrated geostatistical tools in the measure of physical and biological spatial heterogeneity both for categorical and numerical maps with special reference to the techniques of autocorrelation analysis. During his period of research within the Onchocerciasis Control Programme he gained experience on the study and analysis of tropical freshwater communities.

Teaching experience and appointments

His main teaching experiences are on the field of Ecology and on the following specific topics:
General Ecology, Freshwater Ecology, Quantitative Ecology, Biomonitoring Techniques. His lecturers are addressed to undergraduate Students and to PhD students at national and international level
