Biography

Alessandra Andreoni earned her degree in Physics in June 1973 from the University of Milan, maxima cum laude. Her thesis work was in the field of quantum electronics (tutors: Prof. Alberto Sona and Rodolfo Bonifacio) and consisted in the construction and characterization of the first dye laser operated in Italy. She earned the "Diploma di Pianoforte" in July 1973 from the "Conservatorio Statale di Musica Antonio Vivaldi" of Alessandria (Italy).

Research interests

She is leading a group of laser experimentalists composed by one post-Doc with more than ten years research experience, Dr. Maria Bondani, and by four Ph.D. students, Luca Nardo, Emiliano Puddu, Guido Zambra and Alessia Allevi. The present activities are investigations of excited-state dynamics of drugs and other molecules of bio-medical interest (Luca Nardo) with the two cw mode-locked lasers (Nd:VAN, photo 2, and Ti:sapphire) of the opto-electronics laboratory, recovery of chaotic images recorded in frequency down conversion with classically (photo 3) and quantum correlated fields (Emiliano Puddu), generation and characterization of couples and trios (photo 4) of twin beams (Guido Zambra) and holography of big and moving objects with a frequency-doubled highly coherent 1 Joule Nd laser (holocamera, photo 5). All activities are supervised by Andreoni and Bondani.

Teaching experience and appointments

- Since 1986, Full Professor of Physics (1987-90 at Napoli, School of Medicine; since 1991 with the University of Insubria at Como, School of Sciences).

- From 1982 professor of Physics at the University of Milano.

- From 1973, staff-member of the Italian Research Council at the Centre for Quantum Electronics and Electronic Instruments of Milano.

Representative  publications

She is the author of approximately 170 papers published in international journals (20 of which invited) covering short-pulsed tunable lasers, techniques of sub-ns and ps laser spectroscopy with PMT's and original solid-state detectors, multi-step interactions for isotope separation and selective photobiology, investigations of excited-state dynamics of drugs and other molecules of bio-medical interest, non-linear spectroscopy of semiconductor quantum structures, non-linear optics applications to spectroscopy, parametric interactions in the femtosecond domain, fs parametric sources in the blue-UV), coherent interactions for phase-sensitive detection techniques as well as for new techniques of ultra-fast real-time holography. Starting from her experience in the latest fields, she moved to quantum optics, a field in which she is going to apply, in experiments on squeezed states, her knowledge of photon detection techniques suitable for ultra-fast regimes in situations of low photon rates.
