The “Mario Boni” Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Sciences provides expert surgical approaches to musculo-skeletal diseases affecting thousands of individuals each year. The faculty is committed to optimizing the management of a vast range of conditions that can be effectively treated by joint replacements, arthroscopic surgery, hand surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, foot and ankle surgery, pediatric orthopedic surgery and spine surgery. The Ospedale di Circolo is the site of inp atient services an d, as a first level trauma center, cares for some of the most complex orthopedic injuries. The majority of outpatient procedures, such as arthroscopy and hand surgery, take place at the Ospedale Del Ponte. The inpatient and outpatient activities for rehabilitation occur in several facilities located in the Varese area.
Research activities are mainly oriented in the following fields: tissue engineering techniques for the management of cartilage defects and meniscal lesions, factors influencing prostheses fixation to bone, new designs for revision stems in hip arthroplasty and growth factors for bone repair. Scientific meetings and surgical learning courses are routinely organized in order to provide continuous and updated education to national and international visitors.
The Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Sciences offers broad-based residency programs covering the full range of Orthopedics, Rehabilitation and Sport Medicine. Each resident has the opportunity to work with the full-time and affiliated faculty in a busy clinical and academic activity. Our residency experiences are entirely held in the Varese area.
