Biography

Paolo M. Cattorini attended medical university courses in Pavia where he graduated in 1981 (Thesis on the Concept of Death) and philosophical University Courses in Milan, where he graduated in 1984 (Thesis on Karl Jaspers).

He worked as a general practitioner in Gallarate. Then he became Director of the School - Department of Medical Humanities of S. Raffaele Hospital in Milan for several years.

P.Cattorini has been a member (as ethicist) of several local ethics committees and of the National Committee for the Fight against AIDS from 1987 to 1995. From 1990 to 2001 he has also been a member of the National Committee for Bioethics established by the Italian Government.

He was a presenter (theme: Teaching Bioethics) at the 1st Bioethics Symposium organized by the Council of Europe, Dec. 5-7, 1989. For 10 years he coordinated for the International Research Center on Ethical, Legal and Forensic Medical Issues related to Aids, Milan, S.Raffaele Hospital, whose Booklet-Series has reached the 8th issue.

Since 1992 has been the University Professor of Bioethics.
 

Qualifications and awards

Medical doctor; Doctor in Philosophy; Specialist in Clinical Psychology; Full Professor of Bioethics.

Until April 2002 he was a member of the Editorial Board of Advisors of “Theoretical Medicine. An International Journal for the Philosophy and Methodology of Medical Research Practice”, Kluwer Acad. Pub., Dordrecht-Boston-London. He was a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the “Encyclopedia of Bioethics”(revised Edition by Warren T. Reich), New York, Simon & Schuster Macmillan, 1995. Now, he takes part in the Scientific Board of the Journal "Kos. Rivista di medicina, cultura e scienze umane", Milan, S.Raffaele Hospital.
 

Research interests

His main scientific interests are related to clinical bioethics (end of life decisions, assisted procreation, physician’s covenant), narrative ethics (with specific regard to the narrative foundation of ethical theories and to moral dilemmas in motion pictures), ethics in psychoanalysis, relationship between psychological counselling and ethics consultation.
 

Teaching experience and appointments

Paolo Cattorini teaches Bioethics in Courses for medical students, physicians, nurses and other health professionals, both undergraduate and graduate level. He is also Professor in several medical graduate schools including Forensic Medicine, Pharmacology, Psychiatry. He is a member of the Scientific and Teaching Committee, and Teacher, International Master in Medical Humanities, University of Insubria - Fondaz. Sasso Corbaro – University of Genova. He also teaches in University Masters courses: Palliative Care, Social Ethics-Economy, Bioethics, and Forensic Criminology, both in Varese and other Italian cities.

He has published more than 200 articles on the following subjects: philosophy of medicine, medical ethics and bioethics. He was Scientific Secretary of the International Colloquium "Science and Ethics. Man as primary concern" April 7-10 1988, Milan, and has edited its Proceedings.
