A sensational long term program of the University of Insubria: our mission is to preserve and conserve the fauna and environment in Northern Tanzania, which is one of the most important ecosystems of Eastern Africa.
This ecosystem is close to the famous Kilimanjaro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara National Parks and next to the celebrated protected areas of Ngorongoro and the Serengeti.
The Department of Environment, Health and Safety at the University of Insubria has established a program committed to environmental research and development projects, in cooperation with the Italian and Tanzanian NGO Istituto Oikos, and supported by the European Community, the U.S. Agency for Cooperation, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Lombardy Region and the CARIPLO Foundation.
Under the direction of Professor Guido Tosi, professors, researchers, graduate and undergraduate students collaboratively work on this initiative.
The program includes studies of wildlife ecology, the collection of the Maasai population’s socioeconomic data and the production of environmental databases for management purposes.
The project has also produced several Ph.D. theses, scientific publications in major international journals, and has provided job opportunities for young Italian and Tanzanian graduate students.
