The Department of Human Morphology was founded in 2003 to foster the integration of education and research in the various fields of Human Anatomy, Pathology and Radiology.
It manages Residency Programs in Anatomical Pathology, Clinical Oncology and Radiology.
Research in the field of Human Anatomy focuses mainly on the macromolecules of the extracellular matrix and their supramolecular assembly, biomineralization, tissue engineering and integration of biomaterials, angiogenesis, anatomy and development of vascular structures. Available techniques include light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, transmission and scanning electron microscopy and related preparation techniques, EDX, Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM, TMAFM) and a wide array of image analysis and processing techniques.
Research in the field of Pathology focuses mainly on the endocrine tumors of the gastroenteropancreatic (GEP) tract, carcinomas and lymphomas of the stomach, colon-rectum and pancreas, carcinomas of the ovary and endometrium, pituitary adenomas. The principal techniques include light microscopy, immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, transmission electron microscopy, immuno electron microscopy, classical cytogenetics and molecular cytogenetics (FISH) and molecular biology techniques (PCR, capillary electrophoresis and Real-Time PCR).
Research in the field of Radiology focuses mainly on vascular radiology; endocrine radiology; hepato-biliary and pancreatic radiology; musculoskeletal radiology; interventional radiology (endovascular therapy of arterial stenoses and occlusions; endovascular therapy of aneurysms; radiofrequency thermoablation of liver and lung tumors; interventional procedures regarding the biliary and urinary tracts).
