Biography

Mario Raspanti was born on August, 26, 1956 near Bologna, Italy. In 1980 he graduated “cum laude” in Biology at the University of Bologna with an experimental thesis on the electron microscopy of the extracellular matrix. In 1984, after a short period at the Abteilung fuer Elektronenmikroskopie of the Medizinische Hochschule in Hannover, Germany, he joined the Institute of Human Anatomy in Bologna. During fifteen years he was technical manager of the Electron Microscopy Laboratory, taking actively part in all the research carried on in this structure and devising original preparation and investigation techniques in the fields of optical microscopy, TEM, high resolution SEM, freeze-etching, atomic force microscopy, image analysis and three-dimensional modelling. In 1999 he joined, as an Associate Professor, the Human Morphology Laboratory of the University of Insubria where he opened the new atomic force microscopy unit. Since 2004 he is Full Professor of Human Anatomy in the same Medical School .
 

Qualifications and awards

- A full degree in Biology.
- Affiliations to the Italian Anatomical Society, the Italian Society for the study of the Connective Tissue, the Italian Society of Microscopical Sciences and the International Society of Matrix Biology.
 

Research interests

Research interests focus essentially on the ultrastructure of the macromolecules of the extracellular matrix (collagen, elastin, glycoconjugates, mineral phase), their supramolecular assembly and their functional aspects, with techniques of light microscopy, transmission- and scanning electron microscopy, freeze-etching, X-ray spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and image processing.
 

Teaching experience and appointments

- Full courses of Human Anatomy for the graduation in Dentistry (specialistic) and in Oral Hygiene; course of Neuroanatomy for the graduation in Medicine and Surgery (specialistic).

- Member of the collegium of teachers of the Ph.Ds in “Acquired and congenital degenerative pathologies”, then in “Degenerative pathologies and immunopathologies” and in “Experimental medicine and oncology”.

- Member of the scientific commitee of the “Research Center on Image Analysis and Medical Informatics”.
