The Department is the venue for educational and research activity in several different biomedical sciences, with experimental work that also incorporates clinical applications. Specifically, the Department specializes in the fields of biochemistry, human and medical genetics, human physiology, and clinical chemistry. The Department offers all the facilitises and the equipment needed for state of the art research in these fields.
Ongoing research projects include the following:
the enzymes involved in the synthesis of the extracellular matrix (EM) components
the EM during the embryonic development
the EM modifications in cellular models in vitro and in vivo,
specific techniques focused to the EM molecules study,
applications for the diagnosis of mitochondrial diseases,
stem cell applications in medicine,
the constitutional and acquired chromosome variability in Shwachman syndrome,
the cytogenetics of neoplasms,
mutator effects in the pathogenesis of myelodysplastic and myeloproliferative disorders,
characterization of chondroblasts differentiated in vitro,
characterization of the X-linked lymphoproliferative disease,
the mechanisms controlling the homeostasis of interstitial fluid volume and composition, focusing on fluid and solute filtration from the vascular microcirculation into the surrounding tissue space
mechanical and biochemical structural properties of the EM, lymph formation and its propulsion towards the venous vascular compartment.
